blueross
A neighbor asked me to take a look at an old guitar. Head stock says Shafer. There's a Made in Korea sticker. He thinks it's 30 years old, give or take. I couldn't find anything with a quick search, thought I would throw it out there. I'm thinking it is an old department store brand (like Target, WalMart, etc.) or the equivalent beginner guitar. Just for the hell of it, I threw on a set of strings. Plays ok, nothing I'd be interested in. Any thoughts? http://www.blueross.com/shafer/shafer1.jpg http://www.blueross.com/shafer/shafer2.jpg http://www.blueross.com/shafer/shafer3.jpg Ross www.deeppocketband.com www.epitunes.com/Artists/Deep-Pocket

Strategery
Just did a search and the website is no longer available. My first guitar bought by my mom and dad, was a Kimberly and I also got a St. Moritz, 5w/ss amplifier. It was a fire breather. I don't have a clue where it came from. Hey, if the neck's straight and it stays in tune...who cares, right? You can always change the pickup and tuners if need be. I'm curious if the body is veneer...probably so, but who knows. Chip off a piece so you can let us know. Randy "Just play!"

blueross
Yep, no adjustment. It's not bad, but it's not right, either. Ross www.deeppocketband.com www.epitunes.com/Artists/Deep-Pocket
Eric Iverson
Yes, you can take a crappy cheap guitar and with a lot work and expense turn it into something decent. But why not buy a good guitar in the first place, work on it, and turn it into something EXCELLENT? Unless of course you LIKE the "sort of in tune" garage band sound... Bejeeber
That looks more than 30 years old to me. I don't think such models were still being sold new in 1978. I'd guess it's more like 40 years old. I definitely recognize it's type, and quite possibly have encountered that exact model. I don't want to pretend to be an expert on these because I'm not, but IMO they are just POS personified, pretty much everything like the bridge, the crazy pickup placement, etc., being very poorly designed and made. The one exception: sometimes those pickups can have a unique and cool sound, and make it worth paying the $15 or whatever for the guitar. P.S. Oh yeah, it's also totally fugly. IMO. Chad Thorne
When I was about 13 I went to a department store and bought a guitar like that. My mother made me take it back because even she could tell it was crap.
Griffinator
That looks like a knock of the really cheap Sears Silvertones they used to sell out of their catalog for $100 with an "amp" A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends. super combinator
Looks like it has a gold foil p/u sometimes those can be quite good, unique perhaps a better way to describe them, the pick guard design looks very similar to my old teisco delray. Shafer only reminds me of one thing, getting on a bus with the university rugby team deriving down to new orleans from waterloo for marti gra & drinking shafer beer because it was the cheapest we cud find until we cudnt find any more than it was on to something else but cant remember the name, was a hell of a trip!
