Does anyone know how to restore all the sounds in it? I have the factory sounds in sysex format but nothing happens when i try to send them via Midi OX? Does the the D70 have to be in a special mode? Got the manual but it's not clear about how to restore the whole lot, even the font is just gobbledy gook on some of the screen but a lot is fine, so im presuming its all in a factory refresh.

Try powering up the D70 while holding the '5' key. Then, rather than using MidiOx, transmit the file found below using Windows Media Player.

Restore file:

http://www.synthzone.com/midi/roland/d70/D70/d70_orig.mid

The README file for the d70_orig.mid file reads as follows:

Date: Wed, 30 Aug 95 08:54:46 -0700

From: "Dave Schwartz"

Description of d70_orig.mid:

The file D70_ORIG.MID contains a sysex dump, in SMF format, of the original factory presets/memory contents for a Roland D-70 synthesizer.

I obtained this file from Roland Product Support. It must be loaded using the extended MIDI bulk dump mode (power on while holding number 5 key) using a program that understands standard MIDI file formats; it is not raw sysex dump (.SYX) file.

This file contains all of the D-70 memory contents, including not only the patch/performance/preset data, but the also control information (that allows the LCD display to work, etc) that is required to restore the synth after initializing the internal memory.

If you are using MSWindows, use Media Player to load the dump. I was told that Cakewalk would not work (because, I assume there are more than 256 separate "banks" in the dump).

Hope this helps.

Ship it to me and I will make sure it is restored perfectly, ok?

Hey Sven, thanks, it worked! I brought it back from the dead after languishing with no memory for many years. I was already on that site but did'nt spot the 'hold down 5' to get it into bulk load mode. Just had a few minutes on it, it sounds really warm as far as the filter goes. Also got a D50 given to me, think I'll keep the pair of them, just need to repair a couple of key contacts on the D50 and replace a couple of broken buttons on the 70.

Thanks again :)

I have a dead D-70 too. I don't seem to be able to get the restore of the d70_orig.mid file to work. How did you get yours to load? I don't see how to do it using media player, and I tried a file I found called "sysxhlp". When I load the MID file in MP, it just plays it, but the keyboard doesn't seem to receive anything.

Any direction on this would be _greatly_ appreciated.

Tim

I couldn't leave it alone -- I was pretty sure that I had tried the correct steps before. It turned out that when I used my laptop, it worked fine, but when I used two different computers that had MIDI setups on them it did not. The reason was that Windows Media Player was not defaulting to outputting the MIDI info to the correct midi device. I looked at http://forums.techarena.in/vista-music-video/747289.htm, and after changing the default MIDI output to be to my D70 it worked fine from the other machines. Hopefully by logging this here someone else can avoid the headaches I had.

I am not sure what you want. Syntaur helped me refurb a couple of old Roland pieces recently by providing me with parts. I learned about Syntaur from this forum.

Do you need these?
