dv8.Maker
Good question by Stamp. Knowing what you want to play makes a big difference on what to buy. For standard rock and blues a strat is a good way to go. For metal or prog I always liked the Ibanez RG series (though the Floyd trem tuning will take some practice). Peavey has always made a solid introductory guitar as well. Looking for a stoptail, Schecter's are a good bang for the buck. If you can skirt more towards the $400 range you'll find you get better hardware such as upgraded machine heads, bridges and pickups. If you plan on keeping the guitar for any amount of time this gets important. In the $300-$400 range there are tons of descent starter guitars, so it's worth heading into a guitar center and getting a feel for each of them. However, if you want some real quality help it might be worth finding a mom and pop store and paying a few extra bucks.

sweet dissonance
Thanks for the welcome! I want to play prog rock and maybe some harder rock, and I am leaning more towards the Ibanez because it seems to be a quality guitar for a good price, and it's supposed to be good for hard rock. I want to go try playing some different electrics next week to see what one I like best.
soggybomb
I have one of these (Ibanez RGR4), and it is good sounding and appropriate for a variety of styles, despite appearing to be a hard rock instrument on the surface. It is equally suited to a wide variety of styles. it has a fixed bridge, so it is easy to tune, and stays in tune very well.
sweet dissonance
Has anyone played the Dean Playmate guitar? My friend wants to sell me hers and since it is only worth $150 I am thinking it's not that great...
The Geoff
I'd strongly recommend you have a look and play at the current Squier Vintage Modified Series. These are much improved in quality recently and many think that the best of them compare favourably with MIM instruments. guitarzan6000
I just got ahold of a Hagstrom Super Swede...I'm sure you can get them in the 500 dollar range, and as someone who has played for 30 years, and owned just about every guitar out there, I would put it up against a Les Paul ANY DAY!!! And for less than half the price. I am VERY impressed with it!!!!
Panic Button
Probly any MIM fender, Or if you prefer something with a bit more Growl, Epiphone recently dropped the price on the G-400. Which is amazingly good value. $300 Bucks for an SG. You just can't beat that kind of deal. I go to the site, see "NEW FOR 2008" I'm all "OH GOODY!" and i click it and it's all "ALL NEW AMERICAN STANDARD SERIES!" and I'm like..."what?"
