Now, I get the tree cut, transported, and erected properly in the stand, and then I GET OUT OF THE WAY!!! LOL

I'm too much of a perfectionist, and end up driving myself and everybody else crazy!!

Now, I just get PERFECTLY OUT OF THE WAY!!! :snax::D

Doc, do you have a flat 40ft wide min.1450 ft. piece of land anywhere on your land?

I do, but there are x-mass trees planted on it!! My buddy does land his helicopter here all the time. If you are looking for a landing area, we have an airport about a mile from my house. That same bud lands his Bonanza there.

Is that what you were getting at ?

YEP! :)

Of course, to really get the feel for holiday travel you need to wait 5 hours (for no apparent reason) at your home airport, then fly way out of your way to Nashville and pick me up. (Who gets a non-stop flight from anywhere other than New York, Chicago, LA or Dallas?? ;) ) Then we can both enjoy Doc's digs... :D

Well, I wouldn't want you to miss all the drama that goes into most peoples' holiday air travel... you have to get the spirit of the season which is, of course, frustration and an unavoidable urge to never play guitar with a delay every again. (Just to eliminate the word, "delay" from your life forever! :freak::D )

Thanks, Fum. The decorations should be on tomorrow. Then, the assembly of the Christmas village and trains at the base of the tree. That's the plan, anyhow.

That's the front door, that we never use. Good spot to put the tree. That openness is what makes this place pretty cool for playing the guitar...good natural "reverb"!

To do it really correctly, I, as captain of the aircraft could not let you de-plane even in a five hour flight evaluation situation, this could be a problem! my aircraft does not include a "powder room" as part of it's equipment manifest!! :)

Does that mean "Be sure to go to the bathroom before you get in the plane, Neil."???

:snax::)

That might be the PRUNE-dent thing to do NEIL!!! :)

Silly boys...

I may not be a really well travelled road dog, but I've done enough "rodeos" to deal... The first commandment of tour bus travel is, NO NUMBER 2!!!. That and the fact I've run spot for hours at a time in a high catwalk has taught me to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. Once the water is gone the bottle is recycled. ;)

(What?? Whadda ya mean I'm being crude OT on this conversation?!? Hey!! Watch the threads! )

That turned harsh quickly. :freak:

I've done those things in a boom lift 60-80 feet above a movie set....one of the reasons we always wrap the bucket with visqueen or a furni pad...so they can't see what you are doing.

If you get in a lift bucket to strike the equipment, after someone pulled night work stuck up there operating a big lighting instrument, and you see a 1/2 empty Sparklett's bottle, chances are that is not orange Emergen-C or some kind of orange fruit juice mix in it.

OM gawd!!! NEIL!!.....you mean to say THOSE kinds of things are going on up in the catwalks ABOVE ME in the audience!! OK then it's now standard concert equipment..... umbrella!

You laugh but a really great crew I was part of in the mid 1990's here in Nashville had one or two bad apples... When I began shooting spot at the now defunct Starwood Amphitheater in 1997 I was told of a truss spot op who drank too much before going airborne. He was directly over the lead singer of a very famous band from the 1970's and 80's when nature called. Somehow he managed to lean to one side in the dark truss and peed in the only thing available... the chain motor overflow bag next to him. Now most of the them have plastic bottoms, but the main body of the bag is heavy canvas. It ain't waterproof boys and girls! Apparently something dripped on the head of the lead singer, though he never knew it was anything more than water!

They didn't let him run truss spot after that.

The only thing different in the way we rig those and the way you rig them is we rig the motors up high. In rock 'n roll they usually rig the motors to the truss and take the chain up to the grid.

Here are some nasty cell phone shots of some 200' long truss rigs I did at Downey Stages around the 6 million gallon water tank we used. Notice we choke our spansets on the truss and the chain attaches to that rather than a motor. I forget now because I go from one job to the next and it is all a blur, but I think there were 7 motors per truss run. In the 2nd picture the center black teasers are dead hung but the black solids in back and to the Rt of the the tank are on truss and motors. The Lt side one you cannot see was also dead hung. The corners are not yet done in the pic...we hung the rags off both trusses and the beams and wrapped around creating a solid wall all the way around on 3 sides. I did dnot take a pic of it ( because we had not shot it yet and we ended up not striking it ) but we built an oil rig in there....massive steel structure......it was great. They called in a steel strike crew who took it down.

The things by where the guy is standing and in the far corner are wave generators...make big waves in the water tank.

Cool! Thanks, Lister for the inside look.

Yeah... Why do you mount the motors to the truss? Are they permanently installed in certain hang points? Are they on tracks that can be moved to adjust as needed?

My understanding in the concert world is motors are directly connected to the choked spansets for convenience. It's easier for an up rigger to find his point, drop a rope, pull up the chain and rig it than drag the motor up. That and you can immediately drop the truss and then the motor into it's road case easily.

I loved running truss spot! Climbing is always fun! :thu:

As I understand it.. (My course seems like it was a long time ago!)... It is a weight and cost issue. When rigging the motor to the truss, you are lifting the motor weight as well as the truss and whatever else is attached to it. When you are rigging a huge set, weight is going to be an issue. I would guess (in general) that with RnR it is going to be on a much smaller scale, so the possibility of maxing the SWL is minimal... If you have decently rated truss, at least.

Of course I could be wrong :-)

Ok... I've been in less than a festive mood so perhaps this will draw me out of it.. The kids and I tossed up the tree tonight. Oddly enough it looks just like it did last year but I swear I took it down and packed it away, honest.

And this is what snow looked like during Sunday night's dump. It was perfect shoveling weather and perfect snow too. Some terrific snow drifts built up around the out building and house. Looked like icing on everything.

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.

WOW...nice trees you guys...and a helluva conversation to boot. :D

Yeah, during the beginning of the Christmas season, I kind of go into a semi-funk for a while.

I think it's all the commercialism and lack of focus on the Reason for the Season. :D

But...about a week before Christmas...it always happens.

Something sparks and I just jump right into the joy of it.

That's where I'm at now.

I've got quite a few presents to wrap and I'm really looking forward to all the get togethers & festivities. :)

Not being a computer genius like most of you guys, I'll try to get a Christmas tree pic up tonight or this weekend.

Keep the pics and stories comin'! :):D

That shouldn't make a difference for the soft goods he was lifting. But your point is taken if they're rigging a really point intensive, steel frame set that will be up for a while. Applying the weight of the motors to the roof rather than adding it to the work being done makes sense in a longer term situation.
