Parents don't always get the straight story. ;) But I'll ask her again. I'm pretty sure she said she was friendly to her, but maybe I misunderstood what she said. BTW John, I'm sorry, but Thursday is NOT going to work out for me... I'm dealing with the "unrealistic expectations from the client" thing, and a tight deadline on top of it. She thought we'd be able to get three songs done today... we managed one and a part of another. We probably could have gotten three done, but she is trying to do everything with one keyboardist. I could say more, but I'll stop venting and leave it at that for now. ;)
flyscots
Thats OK Phil, up to Monterey on Thursday it is then. Yeah I'm thinking maybe we got the more youthful side of the story. I'll maybe call and speak to Stasi to discuss potential possibilities for new songs, although she seems to be pretty much open for anything. As long as its not like Jewel I suppose! whitefang
"Who Will save Your Soul" displayed that Jewel has valid vocal chops. She just seemed to get in that psuedo-beat, coffeehouse song rut and wore it out. Sure, she needed to "re-invent" herself( a term quite frankly I'm WAY sick of!), but it doesn't look like she's found her right direction. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
Skip_dup1
I`m disappointed to see the latex she-demon thing-some of the things she`s said struck me as someone who, whatever her artistic merit, was at least speaking and performing with honesty, all too rare in the biz these days. Reminded me of Olivia Newton John before she got `Physical`.
Jotown
To me it is another sad example of the state of the music biz. Whether you like her or not, she did have a style and a voice, and has managed to sustain an almost ten year career as a recording artist. I have always felt that her material was not as good as her voice. Each album has sold less than the first one. She is in her option year of her deal. Her management probably blames the label for not promoting her properly. (Isn't that what all managers say to the label when their artist's records stop selling?) The label says "Give us something we can promote" or "Give us a video that MTV will put into heavy rotation." Her managment tells her "you got the body and you have already had a career that has lasted longer than most pop diva's", "if you want your career to go to the next level you have to play ball" (What they are reallly saying is that they have already shopped her around to the other major labels and nobody is biting, so getting dropped by the current label will be quite embarrassing, not to mention the cash flow will dry up pretty quick) The sad fact is that female artists are so heavily marketed as soft porn stars that most of them don't know what else to go with. So they are easily led into playing the role for the sake of their career. I am not a Jewell fan, but I do feel sorry for her decision. It could derail all of the core audience that would have followed her for years. Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"
AlanThomas
Originally posted by SolipsismX: As for the "current genre" argument, I'm not sure if I agree with this. Sure, it's sad when an artist just jumps from one existing genre to the next to stay afloat, but other artists like David Bowie were great because they constantly changed themselves. I hate groups like the chilli peppers and pearl jam who have been putting out the same records with minor tweaks their whole career.
I definately hear ya, and I didn't mean to say that an artist shouldn't evolve or even radically change. But it's a tough sell. I mean, you've got to admit that artists that can pull it off successfully are few and far between. And even Bowie hasn't really switched genres as much as he switches personas. I guess what I meant to say, is that to a certain extent, credibility has to be earned, and that credibility earned in one genre doesn't necessarily accompany you 100% to a new one. But you can earn it, I suppose, if things "click", and you have "it"... Unfortunately for Jewel, I think the only click happening for her is the sound of people turning off their stereos. Jedi
Hey I just saw the video today. Now to be honest, I didn't mind watching Jewel(the girl is gorgeous), but the direction seemed pretty confusing. Initially I got the impression that she was criticizing the current crop of pop stars, but her parody seemed a little too convincing. Because she so attractive it gets tricky. I mean here she is making a parody, but the critical mind comes in "you shouldn't look that good criticizing Britney, and Christina." To me that sounds pretty ridiculous. I would have to see/hear another song off the album before I judged her. All in all, I wish her the best. Lincoln Ross Dead Black Jedis "All conditioned things are impermanent. AlanThomas
I don't buy the "parody" story one little bit... It's like Pee Wee Herman saying "I meant to do that..." I think it's a cover story for a big, fat, hairy marketing mistake. Signatures can appear at the bottom of your posts. LiveMusic
I don't buy the parody thing either, although I have not seen the video. I would think if they were going to do that, it would so obvious, that almost no one could miss it. Sex sells. Faith Hill went from daddy-is-a-preacher-and-I'm-wholesome to a babe in the satin sheets, sliding around provocatively. And changed directions with material, going pop. Last I heard, her album was doing poorly. Garth Brooks goes Chris Gaines. Some of this stuff, it could be labels or stars panicking but some of it can be that the star is just worn out from being whatever they are. They pay quite a price for many years, unrelenting. Even though they can make enormous sums of money. But yes, overall, it will alienate her folky fans. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
artnoiser
How was that cd that was produced by Dan Huff? Any good? Anyone's got an opinion about that one? artnoiser
NYCDrew1642606430
A few observations... 1. Yes, she fixed her teeth. 2. I don't think she is over appreciated. I don't look at the person and make a judgement about the music. Eye candy is just that. I like Jewel's music, I've seen her live show 4 or 5 times since May. Yeah, she's more extrovert with the attire and body language. NYC Drew
