WFTurner
Hey HallJams, I remember you posting this and passing thru in a hurry and making a mental note to listen to it. My mental notes suck most of the time and the thread disappeared so thanks for bumping it up cause your tune is a treat. Love the sound of the bottom, the guitar tones and the fact that the landscape of textures seems to be ever changing, hence interesting from start to finish. Look forward to more in the future. I find it inspiring. Lots of luck. William F. Turner Songwriter turnersongs Sometimes the truth is rude... tough shit... get used to it.

spigotsaol.com
Ken- I had always meant to go listen. Good stuff. Very interesting mixes of the traditional and non-traditional. A lot of depth to the vocal sounds. Any tips? Mark Reiner- Ciku and David Verdi sound a little too under-developed to me. The Christopher Cannon stuff is very cool. I could see you guys taking it a little farther to the edge than you have so far. I loved how on "Calamity" the track was very in your face while the vocals sat back in the wash. You might try the opposite sometime. CarmenC- "This House.." Not enough of a variation from the original for me. "So Long" and "Whole Wide World" both sound very 1983 to me. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I didn't care for "So Long", but "Whole Wide World" was cool. Dire Straights covers the Boomtown Rats, maybe? You might thicken the arrangement just a bit. I liked this tune alot. It's going in my cool forum tunes folder :) Frank

"Whole Wide World" was by a guy by the name of Wreckless Eric around 1980. I loved that whole British Invasion of the late '70s, early '80's. I didn't stray for the originals much in either case, intentionally. Whole WIde World was produced by Nick Lowe originally, and I was trying for a similar style. Thanx for the kind words! I'll probably be a little too candid... Ciku - "True Love" Rtm Gtr is out of tune to the track and sounds like it might be played by a beginner. The vocals are tenative, and not in a good way. There is little build or dynamics to the arrangement. There is a VERY audible single coil guitar hum from 2:05 to 2:10 which abruptly cuts out, not very professional. David Verdi - Tuning and timing issues are what I had the most trouble with. The playing in general could be stronger. I realize that this stuff is probably just demo/idea, but I would label it as such on the website.
farther to the edge?
C. Canon reminds me of pete Yorn or Beck in an odd way. I'd listen to the last Pete Yorn to here the bluesy, singer/songwriter thing taken farther to the edge. Christopher has an interesting, solid quality to his voice that could be exploited in non-traditional ways. Making him dryer, doubling/tripling, quadrupling him in places, distorting him, flanging him, vocoding him, are all viable options. I think you could really do some cool things to his tracks. Of course HE may want to stay legit. Which is all nice and fine, but probably won't sell much product. And you are a record company, right? If you do stay legit, hire the best blues player you can afford on guitar, and dry Christopher's vocals up. He's the show. Put him front and center. On a side note, I'd love to remix "Calamity." If you're at all interested, private message me. Frank
mreiner
thanks spigot.......your comments are true.......i felt the same about some of the material and they are just demos of tracks in the works. christopher did all the instruments on his own. he had wanted to get a full band in on it but the players he had wanted to have are spread across a few states. we're already working on it for the next time around. as far as the suggestion of farther on the edge, i think what youre saying is, either do straight blues(or a specific style), or go way out? Im going to have to bring this up. it is a good idea.pete yorn, gonna have to check it out. if you want to do a remix e-mail me with details of what you would need and how it would work. thanks again mark info@tophatrecords.com www.tophatrecords.com
Steve LeBlanc
This is a rough recording sound wise...really low level so there is a lot of amp noise and such. We recorded it at 4AM...we just hit record no setting levels or anything. The singer is a 20 year old film student that I've known since she was 10. This is her first time on a microphone...I'm really impressed by the natural tone of her voice and have already been inspired to write 2 songs for her. Salty Tonk
Ok guys,Here is a tune that I recorded on my Tascam 788,a couple of days after I bought it,my first recording on it.This is not my band just me playing all the parts. It's not really in our vein of music as we are Alt-country,This is a jazz tune.Once again this was first recording on new equip. so I know its not perfect.Any feedback would be welcome. Thanks,James web page jgc2002 is not responsible for damages ,injuries and or death as result of above post.Side effects include nasuea, dizziness, dry mouth, vomiting, blurred vision, nervousness, loss of memory and in extreme cases sexual side effects. www.mp3.com/salt_creek

KenElevenShadows
Thanks, Dak. I decided to use the MP3s to show an example of the song, rather than give the whole thing away, that's all. If people are that enthralled by the two samples given, hopefully they will go and actually (gasp!) buy the CD. My music often seems to get either glowing reviews (Future Music Best Demo of the Year, Keyboard Magazine and other great reviews, and I usually get several emails from people I don't know per month who really love it), or people don't seem to know what to make of it or simply just do not like it at all. Whatever. I don't know what polarizes people so much, but it's what I do! :)
Originally posted by Dak Lander:
Originally posted by Ken/Eleven Shadows: this will take you right there: http://www.elevenshadows.com/disco.htm
I like what I've heard so far. Dak Lander
Carmen, I listened a few times. Nothing wrong I can see with mix, levels & etc. The lead vocal seemed, to me, to be strained like maybe a different key would suit you better. The wah on the second set was very well done. You didn't over do it & that's nice. Over all, pretty clean tune but the vocals need work. Hell, maybe something as simple as a different mic.
