  1. If it's the right type of people at a table, you can even say things like "oh no not that song, it's terrible, they'll fire me!", or "oh dear, you and my ex wife would get along really well, she loved that song!", people love silly situational humor, especially after a couple of glasses...

I could go on, "Unfortunately that one is on the list of prohibited songs from the Union", another one, "I can't play that one, it's way too popular and played too many times, the ASCAP rates are too high, I will get less paid if I do that..", and on and on...

Re: Sweet Caroline, "Oh that's not possible, people are starting to become more than tipsy here, and as last time they will start singing, the neighbours will call the police, and we will have a situation again..."

    😊

I have an upcoming gig where I’ll have to roam the venue (winery) doing small talk from table to table during breaks (I’m playing solo piano).  Based upon the many years of experience of many on this forum:  Any suggestions on what to say / not to say?  Topics to discuss?   How to make a good impression with small talk?

I’d like to NOT get song requests, as I’m playing some unique songs / arrangements, and am NOT interested in playing requests…. so I do NOT want to say “what would you like to hear?”.  How do I steer the conversation so I don’t get requests for Sweet Caroline?  😀

If they ask you for a specific song, make a joke about how lousy you are and that you only know a handful of songs, etc. 🤪

Winery, small talk, gotta be a lot about the wine to chit chat about I assume?

Well, it does have fader control for the 9th bar, but it is not available simultaneously with the other 8. I think the context is that the board has no real organ emulation engine in it to begin with and is not marketed as having any specific organ orientation (even though they have taken a couple of steps in that direction with the M, by allowing the sliders to work in reverse direction, and improving the Leslie effect).

The more surprising thing to me is that the Fantom-0 has no ninth slider for its organ, since that board actually had a dedicated virtual tonewheel organ in it. They don't even let you access the ninth drawbar level with one of the assignable knobs (nor temporarily repurpose one of the 8 sliders as you can do on the Montage). You have to bring it up in the touchscreen if you want to alter the level of the 9th bar.

Both implementations mentioned sounds like "design crew having no clue about target group", that's alarming!

Took at the KingKorg Neo, primarily because it has a vocoder.  I wish more of the synths had one.  Is it fluff?  Sure.  Would I overuse it and probably cause the band to say "no vocoders" by doing stuff like vocoding "No parking on the dance floor" in the middle of other songs?  Certainly!   I'd already have a hydrasynth if it had one that worked well.  I never could get my Modx vocoder to work worth a darn.

I have the original KingKORG, the vocoder is really good imho, definitely seriosuly useful!

Are there any Korg reps lurking here? I would like to know if a Nautilus 73 AT is planned for later, or will aftertouch be restricted to the 61 and 88?

I really hope for the 73AT, it would be a perfect single-board solution for me.

Korg wouldn't have a clue, looking at the last years releases, pricing strategies, version variant confusions, I get the feeling that they've fired the marketing team and now it's run by some calc sheet focused sales director or something...

Have the non-keyboard version of just the controllers, no keybed  or js/mod wheel

    RemoteZero sl…

the novation utility wants to own every aspect of the midi/daw/gear communication SUPREMELY annoying!!!

otherwise rather mediocre as a dynamic or playable pad controller. Very stiff.

and the menu diving for settings and parameters /templates is confusing.

sliders are short throw and tend to be stiff. 😂

its a good unit for being able to set and forget things remotely, but not as a realtime controller. I use it on midi gear which have no screen of their own. The concept has promise but the build is plastic gone wild.

free is a good price although worth a few dollars more, perhaps.

The win is the keybed, one of the better Fatar synth beds.

Owned the controller (no bed) too, not worse than any other controller without motorised faders etc  In fact the rotary encoders on this one are pretty darn great!

For the lead sheets I went the Google happy go lucky way.

For my cheet sheets, I went with this free service:

    https://www.chordsheet.com/

Linked below is my "exam" for learning the service, easy tune, same chords all the way basically, though I went with repeating lines for each part instead of just listing the part names and x reps, easier to follow, and eventually during upcoming rehearsals there will be notes needed, "organ in", "strings", backing vocal cues etc. where it's nice to have each part included.

I can't seem to get the file upload to work here, when downloading it says there is some problems and the file can't be opened, here's a download link instead:

Grrr, seems I can't edit my post anymore SO, here is a proper link to a share in my Dropbox instead:

I've got a Sequential Take 5 on top of my YC88 for a jam band, some fusion gigs, and increasingly some regular cover band gigs.

I usually just bring the YC88 to rehearsals, and approximate the synth stuff with the (pretty limited) YC88 synth samples.

But as I get a little better at tweaking the Take 5, I find that I miss it more at rehearsals.

Does this mean I need to buy a nord stage to have a decent VA synth at my rehearsals? I'll go ahead and break the news to my wife.

hehehe, she will LOVE the idea..

How do you experience the keyboard, Take 4 only, and not 5 (octaves) ?

My regular gigging band is primarily '80s covers with some classic and arena rock thrown in for fun, plus a bit of more modern stuff. So far, I've handled all of the duties needed with just a Nord Stage 3. This includes some pretty deep synth and sample work. I picked up a Roland XV-3080 rack that I'm planning to slowly integrate into the rig, simply to give me a bit more horsepower for synth/rompler duties. Those two panels of NS3 synth can get maxed out at times.

I also use the NS3 for a few other bands, including my original ska/reggae/pop band reunion shows, which is 80% organ/piano/CP80 and a bit of synth. NS3 works well in my Clash tribute band and a few other smaller pickup gigs.

I got a Prophet 6 pre-COVID and had intended to work it into my live rig. It is still hanging out in the home studio and may not make it to the live rig. I've been happy with pushing the limits of a single keyboard rig now for many years.

Cool thing that the NS3 is delivering big time for you there!!

Just to echo the other guys, I bought a used SL61 ii and frankly, I think I will buy some more of them. Cheap to buy, plenty of control features, and importantly, that action is excellent and walks all over plenty of new boards beneath the £1000 mark.

It's one of the good Fatar beds in it, I have a 61MkII since some years now, and on the hunt for a second one. Also one of the few controllers that actually speaks Sysex too!!

Did the actual synth engine in this work?

Ah ok.  It’s working.  Yesterday it just sent me to an advertisement.

Yeah, it's not ideal with We Transfer, and will also be deleted in a week automatically, I will take some time during the day here and add a public folder in my dropbox and put it there instead.

  12. I get a feeling that many of us here are having a base in Piano, Rhodes/Wurly, Organ, and among things, for this use different workstations (Kronos/Nautilus, Motif/ModX/Montage, Nord, Fantom, Kurzweil etc.) and clonewheels , but for those of you who carry synths, what synth(s) do you carry and why (genre, usage, etc.) ?

The Roland Shakuhachi is not the Emulator sample, which has that super characteristic fifth drop and the upwards second at the beginning, and the overblowing in the middle of the sample.

You can use it to kinda-sorta-passably fake it, but it's really just the Wrong Sound™.

If the synth has pitch envelope it can be emulated fairly well (ask me how I know...)

    :D

Sledgehammer's signature shakuhachi riff was definitely played live via Emulator II for the So album. I've seen it done on various Gabriel tours, and it's not simply a track. I think it defines the song, not just the intro but also during the bridge section. It's also super fun to play it!

As for the Styx song, definitely agree that's a good one to sample...if you're talking about the sound FX at the intro leading up to the synth bass line. My band had considered that one for a while and I had it all ready to go...then we decided that its expiration date was a little past due for the audiences we serve.

Yes, it's a sample from the Emulator II Factory Library, I posted a link to a copy of the actual sample a bunch of posts up, right in the beginning of this thread...

I actually have an original pressing of Switched On Bach, I bought it several years ago at a church auction. It still sounds good for a second hand copy!

My brother in law have that one too, it was my favorite album in his collection as a toddler visiting my sis and him when they had just moved in together. He had a reel tape machine too, for recording music on like others did with cassettes... Need I mention he is a geek.. hehehe!

Last time I visited them (I live abroad) some years ago, we actually listened to the Switched on Bach LP, oh the nostalgia!
