  1. "more wobble" - you mean, more amplitude modulation, like a close-mic'd leslie, e.g. Steppenwolf? I'm not sure the rotors between the two virtual Leslies are sync'd.
  2. Please post if you get this working!! I had forgotten about this. I am triggering samples with an iPad right now.
  3. The VR-09 chart is not very informative when it comes to the drawbars -- they're actually not mentioned. The closest I could find is an indication that the synth parameters are recognized on received as CC in the 70's, but not transmitted.. Some days I wish I had time to build the magic MIDI box I have envisioned in my head for 10 years. It would let you write scripts for transforming MIDI messages on the fly, and run off flash memory..about the size of a pack of smokes. You could build your own appliances with it. (To heck with laptops, I hate them on stage)
  4. Does anybody know if the VK-8 or VR-700 can be used to control the bottom manual of a VR-09? Specifically talking about the drawbars, here. The keys are a no-brainer.
  5. A Hammond spinet is suitable for learning to play rock organ (provided it is in good shape - they all need work if unrestored) .... But it is completely unsuitable for learning jazz organ IMO. There are too few pedals, they are the wrong shape, and most of them have bad-sounding pedals. Additionally, the lower manual does not have the two brown drawbars, making walking bass with your left hand pretty seriously sucky. The VR-09, coupled with another keyboard for the lower manuals d the Roland pedals would be better than a Hammond spinet in this regard. Note also that most jazz organists don't really walk bass with their feet (also Barbara does, and Cherry Wainer did) ... The pedals are used more atonically to give the left hand a "thrum" like a string bass. But you should still learn your way rand the pedal clavier if you are serious about jazz organ. As for key size - organ keys are smaller than piano keys! The VR-09 has organ-sized keys. They are the same width, though.
  6. CEB, I'm 99% sure the key size on the VR-09 is within 1mm of the key size of a Hammond spinet...and by extension, your B3000. The problem is not the key spacing, the problem is the distance between the back of the key and the pivot fulcrum. On the VR-09, it is too close, and this makes it difficult to strike the key toward the back. The fulcrum on a Hammond spinet diving board key is nearly four and a half inches behind the key (I just measured). I think that would be phyiscally impossible on the VR-09. It feels to me like it is about an inch back, but I have not taken one apart. Aside from that, I think the VR-09 action is great, and it is a great organ. It is as easy (for me) to do palm smears and glissandi on the VR-09 as I it is to do them on a Hammond diving board spinet. Easier if the spinet has worn key combs. The rounded key fronts and high trigger point are excellent. I don't do knuckle squabbles. I certainly consider the VR-09 wortht of the name "organ". It is not my favourite organ, but it does a fine job, and does a bunch of other stuff, too. For me, it is a keyboard which can take on any function in my rig in a pinch. I still prefer my real organ, and still prefer my weighted 88...but I can get through a gig on the VR-09, no problem. BTW I tend to play my VR-09 on the "Rock Organ" setting. It has some balls, too. Of course, my main gig rig is an L111, so I could be accused of being thin in the top end most of the time anyhow. Wes
  7. I've always wondered what would happen if I tried to tweak the expression pedal from a spinet (like an L100 or a T500) into working with a digital organ. There are two ways, one way (easy) would be to put the expression pedal between the organ and the speaker and use it as-is. Another way would be to somehow tweak the LDR into the right range for the expression pedal jack...or maybe find a pedal from a spinet that used a pot. But that wouldn't necessarily be any better than the M-audio solution, except for the "throw" being reasonable. Wes
  8. What pedal did you try? I am using the one by m-audio. It's .... kind of alright. I'd like to try that Yamaha one some time. Also, did you try selecting a different curve in the UI?
  9. I don't know about you guys, but I can't play worth a shit if my keyboard is in my lap. If you're going to watch TV...set your keys up in front of it.
  10. I love that Clavinet groove up there.
  11. Okay, that was pretty awesome, now I wish the VR-09 could do that!
  12. Has anybody actually found a use for the D-Beam, other than reverb tank crashes?
  13. To B3 - I bet any store you were testing in would not mind if you updated the firmware for them!
  14. It doesn't really matter if they do. The upgrade is quick, painless, and pretty much foolproof. Kevmo - sometimes moving your monitor speaker a little further away from you can make it seem much much louder.
  15. I run mine into the mixer section of a Yorkville NX55P without issues.
  16. Based on earlier comments, I *think* Kevmo is trying to do a trucker driver's gear change (or similar) using transpose.
  17. In my experience, bagpipe emulation doesn't require pitch slide so much as it requires correct articulation from the player...which is not often easy! If you are doing drones, two of the drones one octave below the lowest note on the chanter, and the bass drone is tuned an octave below that. The drone note never changes. Another difficulty with replicating bagpipes is that the scale is not anywhere close to even-tempered, and the low/high G and A notes are not exactly an octave apart! This requires microtuning capabilities which the VR-09 doesn't have -- if you are trying to replicate highland pipe tunes an experienced listener will know it's "wrong" right away. A final observation is that one bagpipe doesn't usually sound right..you need at least two! So detuning and doubling is definitely called for IMO. For fun and to see what I mean -- try this. Load this Youtube video in two tabs, and click play in one tab a few seconds after the tab. All of a sudden the tone of the instrument takes on a whole new life. Wes PS: I agree w.r.t. Roland needing to make individual registrations exchangeable!!! Or at least document the file format of the saved image!
  18. You know what would be nice? An iPad app that let us the Roland USB Wifi doohikey as an iPad MIDI source.
  19. BTW - if anybody else loses drawbar knobs... I just ordered a new one through my dealer for $2. So at least they are reasonably priced.
  20. I'm interested that you mentioned hiss. My VR09 is absolutely dead quiet. The noise floor must be at least 100dB.
  21. Does anybody know why it requires NiMh cells? Given that it has no charger, that requirement seems silly?!
  22. FWIW - I played a P35 and a P105 back to back not long ago, and was astounded that the P35 felt much better. The next day I played a different P35 and P105 back to back -- and thought the P105 felt better - and that it felt the same as the MOX8 at that store. I played a DGX650 the other night. It felt different again. None of these are SIGNIFICANTLY different from each other. I can't explain my first set of observations, but I suspect at least that Yamaha has different key tops for some lines, even if they are using the same action. FWIW my daily driver is a well-worn DGX 620. BTW, I played the CP5 at a rehearsal one night not long ago when I was filling in for someone. All I can say is WOW that thing is AWESOME.
  23. One of the real plusses on this thing FOR ORGAN is the keybed. Now that I'm used to it I think it's great. Very responsive, as the keys only have to move about 1/32" to trigger. Glisses and smears work perfectly. Of course, I was "raised" on an L111. One minus is that I think the high end of the organ is a bit shrill. It might be possible to fix this with tweaking, I haven't tried. I just roll off the top end EQ on the board a bit.
  24. SK - don't glue them on with anything too strong, they likely need to come off when servicing the board.
  25. In my case, I am gentle with my rig and the VR-09 has never been anywhere other than a stand, a bag, or its box. I can't understand how I lost a knob. I'm tempted to glue the rest of them on with hot glue.
