  1. It's an ipad mini 4. With 64 bit. It's the last of the 10.3.3 iOS. I've read it can be updated.

Yes, according to Wikipedia the iPad Mini 4 can use iOS11...indeed, it can run the latest iPad OS.

Sorry, I guess I misinterpreted your post - I thought your objection to the app's iOS11 requirement was because you use an older device that cannot be updated to this OS.

    Kind regards,

    James

  2. Joey Dosik can play, and sing. This song is usually in Bb but he plays it in C sometimes also:

Wow, nice stripped down arrangement, and such a velvety, soulful voice.

Joey is crazy talented...I remember the first time I saw him singing (probably "Running Away" posted above), I thought to myself..."huh, isn't that the sax player singing?" and then "wait, he can play keys at the same time too?!"

  3. I'm pretty sure the Hammond+Leslie simulation in this app will sound better than my trusty old Electro 3, and I know the EPs in Neo Soul Keys Studio 2 are more authentic than anything available from Nord. However, for one reason or another, I've yet to really pursue with using the iPad as a tone generator - the Electro 3 "just works", there's no hassle...plug in and play. With that being said, I really love the idea of using a lightweight controller and an iPad for everything, so it's probably something to explore properly in 2020.

My beef is with the iOS needing to be v11.

Which iOS version are you using on your iPad? I dare say that if you're using a version older than iOS 11, your iPad probably isn't powerful enough to run B-3X and other recent apps without noticeable latency. My 1st gen iPad Air has served me incredibly well over the past few years, but is not supported by the new iPad OS, and not even mentioned on the compatibility page for B-3X, so it looks like it'll need to be replaced soon.

  4. I have to admit, I'm pretty tempted by this...$100 is pretty pricey though!

This overview video and the demos on the website sounds pretty good. I would obviously like to hear some side-by-side comparisons with Galileo, which I already have...although seldom use.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  5. On a related note, musician fans of Vulfpeck may want to check out Vulf Compressor, which came into being when Vulfpeck"s Jack Stratton called two friends, Devin Kerr and Rob Stenson (co-founders of Goodhertz), and asked them to make a 'vinyl sim' compression plugin similar to the one included in the Boss SP-303 Dr. Sample sampler.

    Good call Geoff!

The Vulf Compressor seems like voodoo magic. I have no idea how it works, but the examples I have heard (in this video and elsewhere) are incredible!

  6. Yes, thanks, and this is the one that's the hardest to measure, since is dependent on the travel distance at the far end of the key, which is only 2 to 4 mm. So I think these numbers have the highest measurement uncertainty, maybe plus or minus a millimeter or two. I tried to cut down on the error for this by measuring it 2-3 times with a stainless steel ruler with cross bar, shown here:

Thank you for explaining your process.

Nice job on compiling all of this data.

Am I correct in thinking that you're supposed to be on holiday? ;)

  7. By the way, I loved this video so much! I can"t properly express how happy it made me.

    Yes, totally agree!

I literally felt myself buzzing with energy while watching this.

    It's incredible.

They also brought out Jack's mom when when I saw them in Ann Arbor. I saw them with my 6-year-old at a shorter matinee advertised as "an introduction to modular funk for children", whatever that means. She showed us how to do the Funky Duck.

Wow, I'd love to see that! ;)

  8. I also included an additional number, the "distance to hinge" that is an estimate of the horizontal distance to the apparent hinge point indicated by the geometry of the key travel distance.

It's perhaps worth noting that the Kawai ES8 and MP7SE share the same "Responsive Hammer III" keyboard action, therefore the "distance to hinge" measurement should also be the same.

    Kind regards,

    James

  9. I watched this a second time, then replayed a few of my favourite tunes. Some of the things that struck me about this performance:

    - Musicianship from every member of the band is off the charts.

    - The percussionist really helped to broaden-out their sound, as did the various guest performers

    - I really like the sound of the CP80 here - it's tone is far more mellow than the typical "crunchy" CP80 sound I'm (incorrectly?) familiar with.

    - The camera keeps rolling for the entire performance! If there were any cuts, I didn't notice them. Love the 16mm film look!

    - Very few (and certainly no major) mistakes.

    - You can clearly see how thrilled the band are to be playing MSG.

    - I loved seeing members and guest performers chilling out on the couch when not playing

    - There was an "timeless epic" sense to this performers - I feel like folks will still be watching this in 40 years time!

    - Jack's Mum leading the group breathing exercise was a lovely touch!

I remain speechless at how awesome this band is!

    James

  10. Nice comparison Scott!

I also like #5 the best, however it may not necessarily be the closest to the original.

I'm not sure about the slow-->fast change on the Leslie though...

Interesting to hear the organ part isolated from the original tune. I assume this was from one of the "Guitar Hero" style games?

I don't think Spleeter is *that* good yet, is it?

    Cheers,

    James

  11. When I initially watched the video above, I thought it was a little strange that a promo for a Leslie speaker plug-in would not provide any Hammond demos. However, after reading the explanation blurb, I get the impression that this is intended more for applying to other instruments/sound sources, and not organ, unfortunately.

So I guess Galileo is still the best Leslie sim for iOS, yes?

    Cheers,

    James

  12. Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack - two of the smoothest, most soulful voices ever to grace my ears.

Every track on their 1972 album is gold, but here are a couple of standouts:

Finally, a very rare clip of the two performing together - terrible audio/video quality, but lovely to see them enjoying each other's music.

    RIP Donny.

  13. I've never tried USB recording on a CP4, however I would suggest trying a relatively low-capacity USB2.0 stick.

I have a Sandisk Cruiser Fit USB2.0 32gb stick which works fine in all the Kawai DPs I've ever tried.

Sometimes it can help to also format the USB stick on the instrument itself too.

    Kind regards,

    James

  14. Cool story Docbop!

...After that is when Stevie stopped working at Record Plant and started recording over at Crystal Sound which he used a lot.

Any idea if something went down that influenced Stevie to stop working at the Record Plant?

    Cheers,

    James
