  1. I remember that well. Twas my SV-1 that impressed you and your rendition of the intro to Bloody Well Right that impressed me. A few weeks ago, I actually took my (recently updated) Wurlie out for a gig for the first time since I bought the SV-1, which was 3-4 years ago. The SV-1 does a decent job, but theres nothing like the real thing, both from a playing standpoint and sonically. Moving it wasnt bad either (I just bought Redkeys Ken Rich gig bag). I wont take it out on a bar gig, but I will continue to for the original band I play in (which mostly does festival gigs / listening rooms). I noticed those gig bags on the link for the straddler posted before, are you able to take your Wurlitzer by yourself? That was always my biggest problem with the Rhodes, always absolutely NEEDING someone else to give me a hand with it. I would love to be able to get this thing in and out of my car by myself, that would be a miracle. As far as use, I expect it'll stay mostly at home and come out for the 'big' gigs (as big as they get with my current group anyways ) only. I'm mostly AP these days and the Wurli on my Casio is plenty good for the 4 or so songs I use it on. When we're playing larger stages I'll probably bring out the real thing, but most of what we do I'd be best off staying at two keyboards for the sake of the whole band having a comfortable spot if nothing else. Honestly, it'll be real nice to have a practice keyboard at home with built in speakers. I can leave my DP at the band house and still work on vocals at home.
  2. so that thing the drum machine is mounted on, is that a product I can buy, or something similar to make the Wurlitzer appropriate for stacking? Going from a flat top Rhodes to this makes me wonder what I'll do with my pedals, as I like to twiddle with them.
  3. Well, the story continues!!! Pretty much right after posting I went to go hang out with a buddy, and as I'm pulling up I get a call from the shop. The owner felt bad and was looking online for stuff, and it turns out that another store in their network (it is a franchise store, but locally owned and operated type ordeal) with a Wurlitzer for $1000 dollars all the way across the country in North Carolina, and its been professionally serviced by a wurlitzer specific shop. I told him I'd made peace with it, but the whole idea originally hinged on what he'd give me for my Rhodes, I knew the conditions didn't match and it wouldn'tb e a straight trade. Enlisted my friend to help me load my Rhodes into my car as we were headed to that part of town anyways and took off to see what kind of deal we ended up with. After showing him the Rhodes he offered at first $500 for it, but that he'd pay shipping on the Wurlitzer. I told him that the least I was willing to part with the Rhodes for was $600, I made my mind up on that yesterday. He agreed to let me pay $400+tax for the Wurlitzer and he'll pay to ship it out. Basically, I end up with the original deal I would have and he's paying air shipping on the Wurlitzer (he said its safer than truck, and if he's willing to shell out more, I'm down with it). No money has left my pocket yet, he said he wants to make sure the Wurli gets here safe. I'm still kind of miffed by the way things originally went down, but he covered his ass quickly enough for me to not get out and talk shit on him or his shop to anyone other than my bandmates who had heard how excited I was about the wurlitzer. Not sure how he didn't manage to hold it in the first place, but all's well that ends well. Its not over till I have a quality Wurlitzer in the back of my car, but at least it seems like I AM getting one.
  4. As much as I'd love a Wurli and it would be more useful for my current bands situation, and its a lot easier to move around than a Rhodes, I plugged my Rhodes back in and pretty quickly made peace with the situation. Yes, she needs some work, yes she's a beast, but it really is the best Rhode's I've ever laid hands on (only ever played like 5 others though). Also, I have a guitar amp now and can crank that shit up and play metal riffs when I'm angry... I tried doing it on guitar and I just suck to much for it really to work, but slammin out some driven Rhodes definitely gets me back on track.
  5. Well... talk about f^&%ing disappointments.... I called the owner and had him put a hold tag on it yesterday when I was unable to find a single person in town able to lend 10 minutes to help me get my rhodes downstairs and into my car. The hold tag was his idea actually, I said I can't make it today but I've really got my sights set on that Wurli, he said he'd hold it. WELLLLLL I load up my Rhodes with my roommate this morning, get all ready to go and decide to call the store to make sure the owner is in... and he f^&*ing sold it last night... he said he didn't get the tag on it in time and someone offered full price (I'm guessing more, he had it listed for 1k, which is a steal)... my band's bass player was in there about an hour before close (probably 4 hours after he said he'd hold it for me) and talked to the owner about my getting the wurli and how excited I was. Apparently several hours isn't enough time to take 6 steps to put on a hold tag... to hold one item for 16 hours for a loyal customer... Does anyone have suggestions on fun things to hit with a baseball bat? I think you all are probably the only people who can truly understand my disappointment.
  6. To be completely honest, although my Rhodes has a little fixing up to be done... its got the best action of any I've ever played by quite a bit. I've played some really 'unuseable' rhodes in my opinion, and my isn't one of them. Again though, doesn't much matter if I'm not using it.
  7. Exactly. What model is the Wurli you are trading for, Scott? I'm guessing a 200/A but there were quite a few models. Check the sustain pedal and tremolo circuits also as they are pricey to replace. 200A I'm pretty sure, black with the built in speakers. Tremolo and sustain work great. The thing apparently sat in a storage unit for a couple of decades. The guy at the store said the spent a full day cleaning the thing out, but that it seems to be in great condition. Apparently very dusty/cobwebby though. Yes, my worry is more the breaking/replacing reeds thing. I'm pretty heavy handed all things considered, and I like that top end grit a wurli gets when pushed, I'm a Medeski fan big time. These days I'm playing in a folk/roots rock band, rhodes never really fits. I throw a wurli patch in like 3 songs, but I have the real thing I'll probably incorporate it a bit more in the sound.
  8. right now the hard part is rounding up a buddy to help me get it in my car, honestly. My mind is pretty much made up, but I was looking to see if there's anything in particular I should be afraid of with a wurli.
  9. So, bit of a musical dilemma I've got. Local used store got in a suuuuuper nice condition Wurlitzer, and I brought up the idea of trading in my Rhodes for it. I've always said I would never part with my Rhodes, its my baby, but at this point I would really get more and better use out of a Wurlitzer. It's where my tastes currently lie... I really use the Rhodes very rarely these days, and it needs a bit of work as well. Basically, I know I'd get more use out of a Wurlitzer, but if I get it I'm going to want to use it live and start bringing it around with me. I know my Rhodes handled it relatively well, but I really know nothing of the roadworthiness of a wurlitzer. Another plus, its quite a bit smaller.
  10. he's an absolute monster. He's my absolute favorite thing to come out of the dead existing, I've never been able to get into them, but he's otherworldly. Had the pleasure of seeing him in person for the first time a few weeks back playing with Terrapin Flyer. My friends convinced me to... uh... 'get into the spirit of the Grateful Dead' for the show, if you will, and lemme tell ya, standing 15 feet away from that man's howling Leslie speaker is a beautiful experience.
  11. I've been telling myself I need to reintroduce myself to jazz. It's how I started playing, but I've generally been more interested in playing and listening to rock for a long time now. I don't think this will necessarily change that, but I know expanding my jazz knowledge will be a kick in the pants for all of my playing. Besides... $90 for 20 lessons from Herbie Hancock... yes please. I'd be an idiot not to.
  12. I've gotten a few great things lately, but the last one is a Fender Super Champ X2 tube head. I've finally gotten myself an electric guitar and decided I needed something I could easily use with both my Rhodes and guitar. I love the little thing, and I haven't even plugged it into my computer and customized the models yet, its only gonna sound that much better. Planning on doing a little video of it with the Rhodes at some point to show it off. I've put off the tube amp for years, and I wish I hadn't, finally got the tone I've always heard but never recreated.
  13. So after (by my figuring) about 13 years of playing music, I've finally written some lyrics that I'm happy enough with to share with the world. Song features Rhodes, myself on a couple guitar tracks, and my recovering from a cold self singing. Its far from perfect, but I'm really happy with it nonetheless. https://soundcloud.com/user3642561/holdin-on
  14. After being out of the game for over a year, I've found a band I want to play with! Amazingly enough, it was the very first people I happened to jam with since getting a different job/a schedule that allows me to play music, and its pretty much exactly what I like playing. High energy folk/rock music, sometimes even borderline punk. I've only played with em a few times but we've already got two shows under our belt, playing almost all original tunes by the songwriter. I'm excited to write some actual parts for these songs rather than just improving with the progression. We're currently without a bass player or drummer, which has made me much more aware of what my left hand is doing. I'm definitely trying to beef up my consistency and trying to remember to hit the big root notes to fill out the sound. I imagine we'll fill out the rhythm section eventually though. Here's two songs, one on a real acoustic piano that was at the first place we played, and one from the second night featuring accordion. https://www.facebook.com/housewithayard/ https://www.facebook.com/housewithayard/videos/1479361365408635/ https://www.facebook.com/sean.fazzini.31/videos/748537138636181/
  15. https://soundcloud.com/user3642561/groovin sampled a drum loop out of a song I like and recorded a little jam over it. nothing too special, but I liked the feel of it today and decided to record something.
  16. I've been saying for a while that these guys are the best thing to happen to instrumental music in decades. There's something that feels really special about it to me.
  17. you don't have a mean bone in your body, do you?
  18. haha, I was the post before that actually, I meant to quote your reply originally but somehow didn't.
  19. I love this thread because it means, if nothing else, I know I'll get some feedback from you! But you're too nice to me! What could I improve upon, both instrumentally and in the mix?
  20. Here's a track I put together over the past couple of days. Its the first thing I've ever written and played bass on, and that was a lot of fun. I'm pretty happy with how it came out actually, which is a rarity for me I think. https://soundcloud.com/user3642561/distant-shores
  21. Squier Modified Jaguar Bass really enjoying it.
  22. How have I never seen this thread? Brian Eno - Ambient 4: On Land
  23. I think worth noting is the fact that the rhythm track is a cardboard box hit with a rock in a sock and brushes playing on a piece of paper for the snare. Thanks for listening!!
  24. I wrote this little melody on banjo and have been playing it for a while, yesterday I decided to try and structure it and record it, just to give myself something to work with. Here's the result! First time I've ever played any percussion on a recording, its definitely not perfect, but its more of an exercise in mixing and recording techniques than anything. https://soundcloud.com/user3642561/long-way-to-go-2
  25. hey, thanks for the input! I had the gain on my recording interface (Akai EIE) nearly cranked to get what I did out of the mic. Any higher and I was ending up with clipping the input. I go from essentially nothing all the way up to about 90% and in that last 10% its tough to dial in. Also, I'm new to singing into mics as well, so avoiding pops on some of my consonants is still a bit unfamiliar. I've been using Garageband to record with (although i also have Audacity for other simpler editing tasks) because I like being able to record to a click. Audacity doesn't have a metronome in it, right?
