  1. Just got back from vacation. Lots of pictures but not many of them online yet. Challenged all week by sand and sea spray on lenses, even stuff on my sensor. Here are a couple photos of the pier at Holden beach at night. With the clouds at the beginning of the week I missed the Super Moon low on the horizon. :(

Holden Beach Pier in the Moonlight by Mike Martin on 500px

The hope of creating pictures like this some day is why I spent the money on a 5D mark iii and an F1.2 lens instead of putting that money towards yet another synth. I love interesting night shots.

  2. Wow. Thanks Mike. I signed up for the online Photoshop/Lightroom cloud. I'll try that. It has been 8 years or more since I used Photoshop. It seems much more complicated than it used to be. I'd like to have a version without layers. Managing layers is my biggest problem.
  3. Thanks all for the information. I could not do much setup because we never know when the rabbits are going to appear. 4 babies have been frequenting the landscaping down the hall from my office. The entire wall in that section is glass. It is a high traffic area and they must not be able to see in because they don't run when people come by.

In the close up shot the baby rabbit was right against the glass. You can see the metal framing of the window at the bottom of the picture. The lens was probably a foot away on that shot. In the other shot I was able to get closer to the window. The rabbit was about 2 feet from the window.

Because I was using my old camera and kit lens I was not able to get any bokeh with either shot.

  4. I took these through the plexiglass window at the office. Any tips on getting rid of the haze and reflection from the window?

  5. You don't need a fancy camera to do any of this. You just need patience. You don't need a fast lens. Why? You are shooting long exposures. It just needs to be sharp and focused. You don't need a camera that is great with low light, shooting continuous burst at 6 frames per second, great with high ISOs, or any of that. You just need a camera with manual controls, which is basically any DSLR, ILC, 4/3rds, etc.

    ...

And a good, steady tripod? Possibly a remote trigger as to not shake the camera on those long exposures.

  6. Well, obviously the grass is not greener in Scotland. ... Sorry, could not let that one pass. :)

I like the picture. Maybe it is because I am from Kentucky, the bluegrass state. (OK. I'll stop now.)

I do actually like this picture. I need to experiment with Lightroom more often.

  7. This is another photo of Arch Rock, this time light painted.

If you don't mind me asking, what lens and settings did you use? Is it post-cropped because the framing of the photo is perfect? I ask because I think my 35mm lens is the best I have for night, but on a full frame it seems too wide.

  8. Do any of you guys ever print your photos? I have and have intended to print more, but like my sharing of photos here, I haven't gotten around to it. :)

My driving force to get better is so I can make some prints that I will be proud to hang in my house.

  9. Has anyone done a walking photography tour where the guide talks about the location and also gives camera instruction? The family is going to Savannah next week and I am thinking about a tour from Capturing Savannah but thought I would ask here first.

I'm also trying to find a host that I am happy with. Tried 500px.com but was not comfortable with the system. Now I am trying Smugmug. My Smugmug Page. Not quite there yet on my page layout. Any suggestions? My biggest goal? Posting my pictures should push me to take better pictures.

  10. Very nice Ken. I'm a few miles from Cumberland Lake in southeast KY, also known as the houseboat capital of the United States. There are people here that spend half a million dollars on a houseboat but I have never seen anything like that ceiling in the middle picture.
