  1. Now you see how relatively easy it is - making a loop based music?! The track sounds very cool (though a bit monotonous at the beginning, but hey - these are loops!). I just hope you will add some live playing to your next loopings.
  2. Oops, sorry! I missed that thread. My very bad!
  3. Hi boys and girls... (Where is our moderator? ) Welcome!
  4. Aaron, I'm not Dave, but I listened to the song. I must say I'm not a specialist on contemporary R&B and hip-hop by any means, but honestly I didn't find any reason why those people at radio didn't like it. It's okay song in its genre, imo. Though IF you're gonna update it, maybe it would make sense to try to bring in some unexpected chord change somewhere around the bridge. In the current version the song's texture changes at the bridge, but the chords remain the same... So this is the only place where I personally see that some improvement could be made. Just my opinion. Technically the song sounds just fine. Cool bass drum!
  5. Dan, thanks so much for your time and for your insights. Sure I would be glad if I could make this demo sound more realistic. I used several string samples from the ASR library (TS-10 can "eat" them) but I didn't find any suitable sample of a solo violin among them... So I ended up using a TS-10's own patch for it and yes, it sounds "brrrrrr..." especially when "naked". I seriously consider getting Giga in hope it would provide such an important stuff like quality samples of classical solo instruments. Interesting that the chords in the beginning bug me the most as well! I just quite couldn't put my finger... Thanks again for listening and for your thoughtful comments. And for the encouraging words of course! I'd be more than happy to share the final version with our community. All I have to do is to find an orchestra that would be interested in performing the piece. ... Though this can be tougher than I'd dare to imagine.
  6. This piece is something I can dig very well. And I do so. Let me guess, all done with software synths? Anyway, sounds very cool. The only thing I miss here a bit is ... some angular, Discipline era (in a word, Frippian!) guitar picking. You know what I mean? But that's just me. I always want there would be more parts in whatever music I listen to.
  7. Without a keyboard? Sorry man but then we have to disqualify you! Just kidding of course. I listened to the Moog modular... liked the sounds. Being quite a stranger when it comes to analog synths I honestly wouldn't think all those sounds could be produced with just one ANALOG machine... BTW, what you mean under "self-playing patches"? A kind of factory presets like in digital synths?
  8. (I "updated" my temporary site and thus I deleted the content of my previous post here) The piece below is a demo I composed and sequenced a couple of years ago using just my old (and not so trusty anymore, alas) workstation Ensoniq TS-10. It should be performed by a real string orchestra. So I'm very interested to get your opinions (especially Dan South's opinion because he is such an expert of all those orchestral and symphonic things) whether it could be good if played by real violins, violas etc. or maybe even the natural instruments wouldn't save it from a fiasco. I am very biased and can't review it objectively. Intersections 7:25
  9. Because of this very thread I picked up one of my old issues of Keyboard Mag (July '89) with the cover story about Adrian Lee and Paul Carrack (of Mike + The Mechanics) to prove myself that I remembered correctly... Adrian used DX7II quite heavily on their '88 release "Living Years" (which is a great recording, IMHO). At the beginning of the interview he says: " ... it basically revolved around two old favorites - the Roland D-50 and the Yamaha DX7II."... Speaking of old issues. I am looking for the following ones: May '91 Feb '90 Sep '89 Feb '87 Nov '84 July '84 March '81 Anybody willing to sell them?
  10. I really dig my FS1R. It's my "go-to" guy! It's too bad it wasn't very popular. Of course, maybe that's a good thing.Ditto for FS1R. Incredible little synth module. ...But it's soooo slow when it comes to Sysex dumping...
  11. I think it was Trevor Rabin who played the majority of synth parts on that record... Anyway, whoever was the player - I would second this. Also I believe Nik Kershaw used DX7 on a couple of his early albums... and with great results as well.
  12. Anybody have a chance to listen to this yet? I'd like comments on the mix if you can spare five minutes. Thanks in advance!!![/QB] Dan, this one is extremely cool little piece of music! You composed it all by yourself? I mean, no one has helped you?? Sounds superb. vlad
  13. Hey Scott, I've visited your site and learned more about you! Ok, you are a drummer as well... Now I see where from all those killer midi drum tracks come. But wait a minute... you are not a keyboard player?? (Well, in this case I am a trombone player! ). Scott, your sequencing chops are ... outstanding. I could never reach such results playing stuff as you do using just a notation software. Keep up the good work! Vlad * And yeah, I certainly have read about you in the Discoveries column few years ago!
  14. Scott, I checked out a couple of your tunes with the freshly added guitar. What can I say... Awesome! Did you play all those guitar parts yourself? Anyway, great work. BTW, your style reminded me of Jens Johansson's recording "Fission"... Are you familiar with this one? I mean your musicianship stands on pair with it easily. Bravo! Vladislav
  15. Scott, Your MP3 is also downloaded... I must say - it's a great piece of very cool progressive fusion! Good jamming all around and your drum programming skills are jaw-droppingly awesome. BTW, the style of that "virtual drummer" reminds me more of prog-metal than fusion (I close my eyes and ... it's like "digital Mike Portnoy" is playing!). How about adding some real guitar to this? (I think "virtual Allan Holdsworth" would fit the bill as well) Vladislav [ 01-25-2002: Message edited by: Gulliver ]
  16. Roland, I downloaded your Interpolation and Hydrator and I think I got your style... It's cool! Terrific sounds are jumping again from the speakers right now... (it's Hydrator). Wow! Nothing to critique, really. Just wonder, why didn't you compose some kind of themes on top of them? It seems like these pieces would be fantastic backing tracks for some nice melodic things going on.. Vladislav [ 01-25-2002: Message edited by: Gulliver ]
  17. Hi Dave, Is his name Nick D'Virgilio? If so, (and if you meet him again), please say "hello" from me. No, he doesn't know me. But I know him because I'm a big Spock's Beard fan! Anyway, (imitating Dave Bryce's voice) "welcome to the board, pal!" Vladislav
  18. Arseny, Your "Squirrel" is an amazing little ditty. Its theme sounds funny indeed and makes me smile wide http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif I find myself thinking of cartoons when I listen to it! Great sweeping pad (what synth makes this?), nice groove (is it programmed or did you use some sampled loops?), tasty arrangement all around. By the way, the bassoon-like sound in the background is a very nice touch! Cool! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif Vladislav
  19. Dave, Just listened to your 2 tunes: Syzyky and Veldt. (For me who lives in Estonia downloading music from MP3com takes ages. That's why I "prefer" to listen to shorter tracks first). Anyway, I liked both of them. Sound simply great. Especially Syzyky. It's a real (how they say this in English...) smoker! By the way, what synthesizer is capable of making such a killer bass sound? Also what sampling CD(s) did you use in Veldt? Regards, Vladislav
  20. Hi everybody! My name is Vladislav and this is my first posting here. (I thought it would be logical to introduce myself before getting into any discussions and other complex conversations. Yeah, complex at least for me because English is not my main language. So, I am sorry in advance for any possible awkwardings here!) Okay. I am 37 and I live and work in Tallinn, Estonia. My daily job is to record and mix various ad jingles for local Estonian radio stations. I do this in the production studio of the company called Trio (and this is also the place from where I have access to the Net). Also I write my own music and try to do this mainly in my home studio. (In the past I've played in several professional bands on bass and there are some recordings out). So far I rely exclusively on Ensoniq synths (just love how they sound!): TS-10, SD-1 and (my main horse) Mr Rack. Outboard effects: Behringer's Modulizer Pro and Zoom 2000. Modest stuff, isn't it? (Soon hope to expand a little http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif). Recently I bought a computer, a midi interface (AMT 8), Emagic's Home Studio Kit and started trying to use Logic Audio Discovery. So far audio works just fine. Midi is my main headache. (The machine always crashes when I try to do some midi sequencing http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/confused.gif but that's another story. Maybe some day when I collect enough courage I would post an appropriate topic regarding my unluck with Logic and all this midi-mess). What else? Oh, yes! My wife is a singer and our two cats try to sing as well from time to time http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. best regards Vladislav
