I think I have a "band name"...

Recommended Posts

After a few weeks of skimming books and having endless brainstorming sessions with friends, I think I finally found a "band name" that I like. (The reason I'm putting "band name" in quotes is because the I'm essentially a solo studio project, not an actual band.) The only thing I want to make sure is that I'm not stepping on anyone's toes and using their band name. I did a search over at Bandreg , Google , and CD NOW , and came up with no matches that were even remotely close to the name I want to use. I went to Network Solutions and the domain name is available. I'm thinking that there is a very good chance no one is currently using this name or has previously used this name... Is there anywhere else I should check? Any other sites like Bandreg which catalog band names? (BTW -- Hiring an entertainment lawyer is out of the question, as I plan to make no money from my music... I'd just about bet that dadburn nigh on every possible name has been used, or some permutation thereof, by the gadzillion bands in this country. If no one's using it to record...go ahead. If someone else surfaces with that name, you can either change yours, or arm-wrestle them over it.

Yahoo has a list of music artists. Click on Music and work your way down. IIRC the list is in alphebetical order. I wouldn't worry too much about duplicates. It's not going to be an issue unless you BOTH hit it really big at the same time. There was a band called "Wham!" in my hometown area. When George Michael came on the scene, the lesser known guys from my area just changed their name. Two years later, George went solo. No more Wham! I wonder if those guys ever went back to their old name...
Originally posted by Tedster: If someone else surfaces with that name, you can either change yours, or arm-wrestle them over it.
If that situation ever happens (unlikely, but you never know), I'll probably just throw a "UK" at the end of the name, as one of the bands called The Charlatans had to do. (It'd be kind of an ironic touch since I'm not even from the UK... LOL... actually Wham! did that too (their name was actually Wham! UK). But they WERE still from the UK at least. Only thing is, there never was a Surf I. And yes, that's the best joke in the whole movie. --Lee

I've had a couple of altercations over my band's name and the only reason I've come out ok so far is that we registered our trademark. If your that concerned I'd do a check with USPTO to see if anyone is usuing the name you want to use. I'm pretty sure you can do it online. If not there's some kind of registry available at libraries. Sorry I'm not being too specific, but the info is out there.
