The Van Halen Jump Greensboro Tuning Disaster Explained

ABECK

Recommended Posts

In the interview below, VH guitar tech Tom Weber finally sheds some light on the Jump Keyboard tuning fiasco.

Check out the vid starting at 22:20.

To sum it up:

There was no sample rate issue. The keys track was in tune.

Eddie had been bashing the EVH Wolfgang guitar headstock into the stage and making all kinds of racket (perhaps to test the stability of the model). Tom held up a tuned replacement and Ed waved him off.

They went right into Ain't talking bout love after that and Wolfie notices the tuning issue, so he adjusts the bass to be in tune with the guitar (pretty impressive during a stadium gig!!!)

Of course, then when Jump backing track comes on, it's out of tune from the Bass an Guitar. So there it is. On stage guitar bashing and it's the keyboard that takes the heat. When we gonna get some respect!?!?

Greg Rule was Keyboard Magazine editor for a while. I didn't know he worked with VH. Thanks for sharing this, I will have to watch the whole thing at some point.
