Look for a post by Ernie Rideout - here is a short quoted line: "Bill Leigh, editor in chief at Bass Player, was let go, too."

I didn't see any postings in the Lowdown concerning this.

That sucks. I wonder how the decision making goes in this process? "We need to save a few bucks, fire the highest paid person at Bass Player."

Dumb.

Bill, thanks for your contribution to the magazine. It will be missed.

Bill thanks a lot for all the years you have contributed to BP and all the great articles.

I always enjoyed to read your opening letter on the magazine

Quality work means nothing to Corporate America, nor loyalty to good people, no sense of obligation to "dance with who brung ya," only the frickin' bottom line. Gotta hate it.

Bill Leigh, thanks for changing the magazine for the better during your term.

Gotta hate it.

Fascist. Sorry, had to get that out of the way. Generally, the good companies know how to balance growing a company for the long-term and appeasing shareholder and analyst pangs. It is not always black and white, and plenty of companies have failed or are failing because they refused to change and restructure. I am not saying this is the case with Mr. Leigh, but I think your statement paints with a very broad brush.

Weren't you the one just advocating for Heir Kennymeister? ;)

Not advocating, just mentioning a fact.

Socialist, actually. ;)

I'm okay with that! :D

That is too bad, Bill was the perfect spokesperson for Bass player. I guess desperate times call for drastic measures, and our editor in chief had to feel the effects.

What a shame, best of luck Bill!

Has this been confirmed yet?

Oh and for the record, it's not just Corporate America. Just about every enterprise in Belgium (my employer - an American bank, granted - included) is sacking people left and right. My job is not affected yet, but I give it 6 - 12 months tops.

It's not as if the position which were cut paid huge amounts of money.

Indeed. Here's to Bill becoming a freelancer/private contractor type fellow who ends up making more money than when he was on the payroll. He's a smart guy, and is now well connected in the business. We haven't seen the last of him yet.

Things are just the way they are, and they're only going to get worse.

That bodes ill for Bass Player as a whole.

Look at a lot of news magazines and newspapers, they have cut staff and decreased in size, because circulation and related ad revenues decrease income, but overhead remains the same.

I've been subscribing to BP for about 9 years, and it's been a great source of news, and a real resource for learning. I hope that BP will be able to maintain an internet presence and a newsstand presence.

If you like BP mag, subscribe, and hit up their advertisers on the their website, every click shows the advertiser that this site is worth his time and money, and BP stays in business.

Otherwise, the publishers will have to make cuts, that's just sound business sense.

Sorry to see Bill go, good luck to him in the future.

Hi Everybody.

Making a statement here regarding Bill's departure was on my unbelievably long list of things to do, so please know it was on the agenda. You guys have always been an excellent resource for insight, advice, and a feeling of satisfaction that the magazine is making a positive impact on people's playing lives. Anyway, thanks.

Regarding Bill leaving...um...it sucks. It is for all the same reasons that underlie the general state of suckiness in the economy, and the ownership of our company is feeling the pinch big time, both from decreased ad revenue and an unwillingness on behalf of the banks to negotiate debt. This all adds up to a serious need to save money in order to survive.

Does that mean I agree with the choices? Not at all. But that's the deal. In addition to losing a close friend and colleague, the magazine has lost a powerful editorial voice and visionary. It's an enormous loss.

Going forward, I'm assuming most of Bill's responsibilities. I'll be shepherding the magazine going forward, writing the editor's letter, etc. Working here as long as I have, I obviously have a lot of ideas that I'm excited to see come to fruition; just sucks that it's happening under these circumstances. My job description is now fairly outrageously heinous, from a workload perspective. Oh well; I'm gainfully employed, and am thankful.

Please stay in touch with any and all comments and concerns, and keep the story ideas coming. Thanks

Sounds to me like he has a handle on it.

Good luck Jonathan - dems some big shoes.

Jon,

Thanks for posting. I'm sorry to hear about Bill.

I look forward to what you will bring to the magazine. I'm sure after losing Greg and Bill, you'll be short on time to think and organize.

Of course, this does give you more reason to send me equipment to review...

Ya got some shoes to fill, John. I wish you luck.

Bill, where ever you land, hope it's on two feet.

I have a cost-cutting idea; stop sending me renewal notices when there's six to eight months left on my subscription. I'll renew, trust me. Think of the postage you'll save.

I let my subscription expire. The last straw was the review of some multi-thousand dollar bass that was has numerous design and construction flaws, but they gave it a positive review. Every product reviewed is great no matter what it's flaws or price tag. I can turn on QVC for free and watch shills hawking products.

I understand that the magazine needs to generate income and advertisements and product reviews are part of that processes, but those product reviews must have a ring of truth to them or it all becomes just another info-mercial. So personally I think that the magazine needed a shake up, and hopefully the result will be a magazine that provides honest product reviews and interviews that aren't just edorsements for the artist's latest cd/dvd and some music education.

Sorry to bring down this thread, but I really would like to see the new EiC move the magazine in this direction. I would then think about buying a subscription.

Top tip from Frank

There's no need to send letter all the way to europe to renew, send me an email one month before and I'll be happy.

Bill will surely be missed, but at the same time Jonathan has been doing a great job on BP, so I think (and hope) it will be smooth and nice for everyone.

Hope to hear from Bill soon, and best wishes to Jonathan!! Keep up the good work, buddy!

Yeah I sure as hell am gonna miss Bill's work. His writing at his best was, in one word, inspiring. I think this was a poor decision by those that write the checks. I may consider canceling my script in protest and tell them. Losing business because they sh!t-canned a beloved staff member is a poor "cost-saving measure".
