auto wah pedals

Any really good ones out there? the Boss AW-3 dynamic wah is OK, but it kills the tone, not transparent enough - too processed. Is there a high end stomp box out there????

I have a Boss AW-2, but I can't get the thing to trigger well. I found a DOD FX25 Envelope Filter cheap at a pawn shop, and that thing will do everything from just barely perceptacle quacks, to unusable way-too-much. If I set it right, I can get some good funk stuff going. I'm sure a boutique pedal would probably sound much better, but for $15, this one will do for now. It really follows the playing dynamics well. But, it can tend to change the tone also. (It seems to get REALLY bright at the high end of the sweep...almost piercing). I put a little light Boss CE-2 compression after it, and it seems better.

isn't the whole idea of an auto wah to get that over processed sound? i always went for that anyway (YMMV)... and i love the boss dynamic wah because of the amount of control. it is a really hard to effect to use with any subtlety, and if that's what your after, it may be a hard road to satisfaction :(

i've heard the electro-harmonix is the best out there, but i haven't been able to play one yet. maybe you can find one where you're at.

I use two envelop filters: the Moogerfooger Lowpass, and the Maxon AF-9. It is like a love/hate thing with me. The mooger is really really good both for guitar and bass, the Maxon sounds different and I've used it on guitar a lot. It reacts differently when run on battery or power supply, which is a drawback for me because I would perfer to use it with my pedal power but it sounds better when on battery. The mooger is not battery operated.

To me it's THE sound of funk/r&b/porno and it makes me happy all over to use it (guitar fills for "Let's Get It On", anyone)?

Subtle is not what it does, for sure. I used to use it in a country band and piss the leader right off...

I bet is sounded quite cool too, :thu: ! Not that I'd even have much of a chance to play in a country band, but that sounds like something I'd do. I flipped a coin over bringing a kazoo or not to an audition. I was going to kazoo some of my guitar solos while playing them. I really want to do this but I've chickened out every time.
