onlyonenote
OK I could do this all night. What I listen to all the time: Steve Morse John McLaughlin Al DiMeola Paco DeLucia Steveie Ray (my pick for most soulful) Pete Townshend (Hell of a writer and inventor of the rock opera) Jerry Douglas (Dobro slide) Duane Allman (Smoothest slide in heaven, listen to BLUE SKY.) Alex Liveson Earl Klughe Peter White Often listen to: Johnny Lang Sonny Landreth (unique slide) Derek Trucks Hendrix Great but don't get much play: Santana (My 13 year old asked ifI knew Sanantonio) Clapton Christophere Parkening Mastro Segovia Steve Howe Robert Fripp Johnny Winter Erik Johnson Jeff Beck Life's pretty good, isn't it? Can't help but wonder what some the best would be playing if they hadn't departed at 26, 27, and 35. That's my top 20 or so - will probably think of 10 more later. Or was I supposed to choose just one? Onlyonenote "The best way to build up speed is to start slowly and exactly." Steve Morse
Fender Bender_dup1
One player not mentioned by anyone is Neil Young He is IMO the most original player ever to play a Gibson guitar , he is also a fantastic writer , something that many other players , great as they are , never accomplish. Neil Young he never widdles but piddles all over yir Malmsteens & the like Cortez the Killer , encapsulates everything thats great about him in one track. Give me a break! icehole
I think the question was - who's your favorite guitarist? Here's a few of mine: EVH, SRV, JMH, Danny Gatton, Tuck Andress, Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, Angus Young, Paco de Lucía, Michael Hedges. Here's 2 of my faves not yet mentioned: Jeff Healey, Steve Gaines. And last, but not least: Kyle Gass, and of course... me.

jaycee22
Definitely agree with many listed above... (especially Chet Atkins ) But, to me, (and sorry if I missed it) conspicuously absent is Jim Hall. The guy is amazing - if you're into Metheny, Scofield, Frisell, etc., Hall is the bridge between those guys and the older players. Give "Concierto" a listen - brilliant!!! -JLC

whitefang
What I find disappointing is, that for a guitar forum, where everyone mentioned some very good players, there was only ONE OTHER PERSON to mention John McLaughlin! Did someone claim Hendrix was the reason for them playing guitar in the first place? Well, McLaughlin was the reason I almost QUIT! The man raised the bar so high, everyone else almost comes off as HACKERS! Even when he's not soloing, his quick and imaginative chord fillers are almost solos in themselves. Listen to "Vision Is A Naked Sword" or "Hymn To Him" from "Apocalypse" for a good example. I'm not knocking any others on all these lists...most of them are my favorites, too. I just consider the Mahavishnu as king of the hill... And to LEE FLIER: Just how old ARE you? Mick Taylor? Jeez, I've been a fan of his since the days with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers! And I've championed his play over Clapton's all along. He did a cover of Freddie King's "Driving Sideways" on one of them old Bluesbreakers LPs that showed he KNEW what blues was all about. Mick Taylor! Damn! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
