Fretting Over Re-Fret

What about you guys?

I've a '69 LP Deluxe (Gold Top) that has reached the end of the road with its' frets.

Given this has been one of my main axes for studios, it's had alot of play.

I'm in two minds, 'cause I still want to play it, but yet realize the "ouch" factor that can be applied to it's value after a re-fret.

All the same, when I bought it (about 12 years ago) it was hardly a classic, and I bought it because it played and sounded killer (it's the one with the thin humbuckers) and I'd like to keep using it.

What about it? Forsake these fn collectors driving up the market? Or box it, remember the glory days, and buy a newie?

Cheers

Rick

Sheesh... I went through the same hell with my '52 Gold Top. NOT because I gave a rat's ass about any potential decrease in value, mind you. As far as I'm concerned they can bury me with that guitar and I don't intend to sell it. Guitars are meant to be played, not displayed in glass cases. My not so humble opinion.

Anyway... the reason I was so hesitant to get mine refretted was because I was paranoid to leave it with someone, and also paranoid about them doing more to the guitar than I wanted - that is, drastically changing the way it feels, which I certainly did NOT want.

Luckily, I found a guy that I totally trusted who'd worked on these guitars a lot, and knew what to do and what NOT to do. I told him I didn't want jumbo frets on it either - I wanted them more or less like the originals, only not worn down. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif He did a fantastic job and I'm very happy I did it.

So I would say, GO AHEAD and get the refret but shop VERY carefully for the person who does it, if you don't know someone already that you trust.

I was going to suggest 3 gifted individuals, capable of performing the work. Then I checked out your location! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Somehow I don't think you're ready to ship it to Nashville! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

A real, quality refret - one done by a reputable, known luthier - shouldn't alter the value of that particular instrument. If you feel it has a good deal of inherent worth it well only make it more sellable if it's in playable condition. Really bad frets translates as = "bad condition". Pay more and get one of the top 5 guys to do it, like a Suhr or some such... Hmm. Didn't I see the name Rick Turner posted here a while back?
