Summer Saturday evenings they have the "Blues Garden"...some of KC's most popular blues bands come and play outside. Beautiful night...blues, brew and barbecue...ahhhhh....it just doesn't get any better than that! So, anyone got any similar places in your neck of the woods??? My brother's Jazz Quartet plays there sometimes along with other blues/jazz bands. It's a nice relaxed vibe out on the back deck. Too bad we don't get more warm weather though. So Many Drummers. I ran mains down to it last fall and we rehearse down there( that is if it ever stops raining for long enough!!) As for cool places in our local town, there is a bar by the river where they do blues nights and I think its fab... The only downer is I go there to chill out and I very often end up being cajoled into playing.... strat0124 Posted May 21, 2001 Share Posted May 21, 2001 Virginia Beach/Norfolk in the summer....bands almost every night of the week, and lots of outdoor entertainment. The only problem is it's mostly "tourist friendly" music, but occasionally a pearl will appear among all these oysters. I was surprised recently at a local Mexican restaurant with an authentic Mexican band, I wanted to record them right away, and gave them my card...they haven't called back sadly. Also eating at a country restaurant called the Virginia Diner there was a band whose singer was damn near like Hank Sr., except there was upright piano, harmonica, a snare drum, and guitar. Really eclectic, and excellent performance. Probably our best blues clubs would be Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach and Goodfellas in Hampton. That's about it. The best include Thornton's Winery, about an 8 month season of jazz weekend nights in a setting surrounded by rolling hills filled with grape vines... and sip and sup to the jazz. Humphrey's by the Bay, a cool 1200 person venue. 83 name acts all through the spring summer and fall in an outdoor setting... If you have a small boat, you can pull up on the piers next to the venue and get a great free show! Beautiful place with great evening ocean breezes. The Gaslamp district in San Diego's newly redeveloped downtown has several big shows a year where they close off the streets and setup 2 to 4 stages for dozens of bands. Big crowds. Lot's of adult fun. Balboa Park, every weekend in the Organ Pavilion, a free, high quality organ recital on a great big pipe organ. You sit in a next to a giant garden and amid dozens of acres of park and the San Diego Zoo. There's more, but I don't want to encourage too many people to pull up stakes and move here... Another idea was to use this house as a recording retreat. There's 1200 feet (380 meters Simon) of pristine wild river running through the back, snow up to the giraffes' na nas' in the winter... Canoes with topless co-eds in the summer... ADATs and Fostex VF-16 and PCs' and bundles of high end mics' and........ All heavily wooded and secluded. So, do we toss the rental income in lieu of luring producers and artists or, set it up for the forums first collaborative effort? Be a great place to capture raw tracks. Just thinkin'..... A beautiful amalgam of bikers, cowboys, tourists, and locals make this a treasure even today. It's been the recluse of some stars in the past, and it still retains its charm. Scott from MA Posted May 22, 2001 Share Posted May 22, 2001 Geez... I gotta move! There's absolutely NO music scene where I live. If you want to do anything, you have to drive to Boston. I lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a while. That's a great place to be a musician. It's a real arts-based community, and there's always good music playing somewhere. When I felt like I needed some quiet time, I would grab my acoustic and go out into the desert to the dried riverbeds. I also lived in Newport, RI, for a few years. Not quite as nice as Santa Fe, but at least there was a good music scene, especially during the summer.
