Jeff Beck

Recommended Posts

After playing the guitar for over 25 years I finally got to see Jeff Beck last night. Oh my God, what an experience. I have never seen anyone so in tune with the guitar. It was breathtaking. The highlights were the slower ballads where he played some slide. Wow!!! He was so melodic, so expressive, so emotionally intense,....... His tone was amazing! Now I know why he is and has been respected by musicians for all these years. It was a very memorable event for me.

He's going to be in Atlanta in a few weeks...

Let's see.. $32 face value for the ticket. $5.84 "Ticketmaster charge". $2.76 "Ticketmaster handling fee".

Over $40.

After paying for gas, food for a day... I can't afford it, and he's basically my favorite guitar player.

Thanks, Ticketbastards!

Chip, you can't afford not to... it's that good.

Put me down for a $.50 contribution to the "Send Chip to Jeff Beck fund".

With all the high rollers on this board, we'll have you there in no time...

STOP! Ahgg...

I've just plopped down $500 for a preamp, I've got a car payment due, rent, the IRS is still reaming me from last year, had to do a surprise move that wasted $$$, ahhhg... $60 for a night on the town! Ahhhg... Jeff Beck... AHHG....

What makes it worse is I missed him last time through with SRV: "oh yeah, I'll get a chance to check them out some other time", a week later... uhg.

What if he doesn't tour anymore? AHHHG.

I CAN'T AFFORD IT!

No, wait, I can... Because I'm not spending money on the OPA627's like I had thought I would have to to go in the MP20, since I'm getting samples...

Right? It's not exactly the same, but...

... and I've been dutifully eating $2.00 rice bowls for the past week so I should be able to feel free to buy food while I'm in Atlanta, right?

Ok, twist my arm already! Geez!

The funny part now is that the ATM machine decided to eat my ATM card last week and I only have a temp card that doesn't work with VISA.. so I can't order them right now, and I've yet to receive the replacement. AHG. That might be a problem.

Of course, if my roomate can't get the gas service switched over to a rate-controlled amount I'm not going to be able to afford anything at all. Thanks, deregulation forces of the world!

Ahg.. sorry for the poltical quip.

Beck.

I highly recommend going out to see Jeff Beck, if you can swing it financially and if you can find an available ticket to one of his shows. I would rate it is a "must see" show. Don't miss him if he's in your town!!!

Saw Jeff last year.. amazing show, other than the fact my wife was bored as hell! Last time I take her to see one of my heroes!

By the way, just bought his new album yesterday... not a bad note on it, and still managed to take a left turn away from everything else. All this from a man who would rather work on his cars!!

Jeff just played the Universal Amphitheater in LA, and it was BECKorific! I also didn't get the best response from my wife... I think she thought Elton John / Billy Joel was the best show she saw this year... LOL.

At the show, he played a lot of material from this new album, and his last. They're both blending his new interest in techno rhythms and Arabic melodies with some interesting takes on the blues. The control he has over his sound using his fingers and tremolo technique is fantastic, and unmatched. He hardly ever takes his hand off the bar, and he has awesome control over his dynamics using the volume control.

Of the "Yardbird Three", Beck, Page, and Clapton... I think Jeff Beck is the one who's playing the most groundbreaking music... and of the three I think the most he's the most interesting player. (But I still like and respect Page and Clapton! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

What's up with Jeff putting out two CD's in a year... and two tours! I'm not complaining. In fact, if it's for the money... I hope he gets all he needs!

He's not concerned about the money as much as he's concerned with playing the guitar in a way that he hasn't played it before. The album's not about how many people are going to buy it; it's about having fun, breaking new ground, and inspiring yourself in spite of what the record company tells you is 'acceptable.' Not many artists can get away with that. And he totally defines the term 'artist.'

Now if we can find him a current hairstyle!!!

Long live JB!!

AHHHG!

I'M TRYING!...

I think I've got a friend in town talked into going with me, which will force me into coming up with the $$$ (and keep me from thinking too much about Negative and Depressing things in the pre-requisite 2 hour drive there and back (HEY, bonus points for a Jeff Beck pun while referencing Jeff Beck??? ) - I *think* it's going to happen... Can I try calling you tomorrow when I find out? Are you going?

Thanks either way...

I *thought* I had it lined up, but now "nothing". I'd drive up there by myself and try finding a ticket, but the drive back is fraught with 2 and a half hours of "Fun Solitary Thinking About Everything That is Wrong and the Utter Pointlessness of Existance"... I tend to think way too much on such trips; I'm likely to either invent a new self-renewing power source on the way back or decide I should be devoting my energy to single handedly bringing Congolese religious chant music into the pop mainstream or something equally crazy.

Ahg. I really can't afford a $60 day right now. But it's Jeff Beck. Frick. ... and I'm recording a drummer tomorrow and I'll want to bounce that into the computer monday, and... ahg...

Frick frick freaking frick. To make matters worse there's supposed to be some freak cold front coming in sunday night: it was 75 here today, watch things freeze over monday morning, if I decide to just go up there and try my luck. Which I'm apt to do, but... ahg...

Agh... is right! No, I didn't make it to the show. I messed up my back a week and a half ago, and Monday I went to a chiropractor, which felt good but my back was pretty sore afterward from having been majorly adjusted. Standing for hours in a club didn't seem like a good idea. I'd gone out to a club last Friday and couldn't stay for both bands, which I'd really wanted to.. had to leave after the first one. Grrrr...

The back is getting better but slowly. I'm really sorry I missed Beck though... what a drag.

Nope, no, ahg...

.. and to top things off, the "massive cold front" that was supposed to freeze things over didn't happen. Great.
