keyboard hardware question about RV

does anyone know how keyboards generate release velocity?

a discussion about polypressure brought it to mind again.

i think for PP, you need a separate sensor for each key,

but i was under the impression that release velocity uses the same sensors that are used to generate velocity, except it does it in reverse - the time it takes for a key to move the distance between 2 sensors.

if this is true, it doesn't require any extra hardware, and just a minimal amount of extra software to implement it, and i don't understand why more manufacturers don't do it.

is this correct?

Release velocity should be the same as velocity, just done after a key up command. The velocity level is many times the same as the initial key on velocity.

Velocity curves happen over time, though. 0volts to a maximum. A release velocity curve would be a maximum to 0 volts.

Aside from the poly/channel issues, no extra hardware is needed.

My old Ensoniq VFX-SDII will trigger voices on key up commands. I'll have to look deeper into the velocity issue. Thanks for reminding me.
