Live music in San Francisco...

Hi guys...as some of you probably remember I'm italian, as Marino. On the 25th I'll leave to go to San Francisco for vacation...a 3 weeks tour around the south-west.

I'll have free time in SF before and after the tour...as you read in the subject...

where to go to listen to live jazz music or good rock music in San Francisco?

If someone of you wants to know an italian fellow...

Ciao.

Ciao Andrea!

I've no answer, since my last visit was a while ago, but I think you'll like San Francisco - it's one of my favorite cities in the world. Simply beautiful.

A former student of mine went there just a few days ago, with the intention to stay for a few months and keeping his jazz studies.

Solo un consiglio: non tentare di girare in auto per la città... è peggio di Roma o Milano!

On with the advice about music clubs... :)

I'm in, or at least very close to, San Francisco at the moment. I'm still finding my feet here so if you do find some cool places, please let me know! I might not be here when you get here, but please keep us updated.

I don't remember their names at the moment, but there are at least two very good jazz clubs in North Beach (along with a lot of topless/bottomless bars, porn shops and 'The Stinking Rose' garlic restaurant...)

This is within a few square (and triangular) blocks. Easy to find if you're walking. One of the clubs is on the corner of Broadway and Columbus, just down the hill (Columbus) a few feet. The other is 1-1/2 blocks down Broadway. They both have top-flight acts.

Enjoy, but watch out for the Parking Meanies - they're fierce in SF...

Bimbo\'s is a world-famous room (I think this is the one at Columbus and Broadway.)

Across the bridge in Oakland is Yoshi\'s , another major jazz and soul room.

There are also LOTS of small jazz rooms, with local talent (some of which is terrible, some of which is world-class. Get the local Sunday paper to check out the likely candidates. (Sorry i can't be more detailed, I live 150 miles south in Monterey, and don't get up there much.

And that's another option - come down to Monterey, see the Aquarium, drive the Coast Highway to Big Sur, stop at the Monterey Beach Hotel and listen to our little duo - if you do, be sure to say hello.

It's all about the music. Really. I just keep telling myself that...

Thank you for all the detailed info...I'll be in Monterey and Big Sur...I just don't know what the schedule of the tour is going to be in detail...I don't know if we will spend the night in Monterey...I'll take note of your venue anyway.

Thank you again.

Ciao

You can always find decent jazz in SF. Much of the Jazz scene here is latin influenced. Here are some things to check out in late July/Early August.

Yoshis in Oakland Headliners:

Joey DeFrancesco finishes up on July 20

Kenny Burrell - July 24-27

Bob James - July 29 - Aug 1

Gato Barbieri - Aug 2-3

Pharoah Sanders - Aug 5-10

Jane Bunnett & Spirits of Havana - Aug 12-13

Roy Hargrove - Aug 14-17

Oscal Peterson - Aug 19-14

Stern Grove Festival - a great free afternoon outdoor venue but you have to get there real early. It starts at 2PM, but you need to be there by noon or you will be sitting in the trees. Bring a picnic and a friend.

Aug 10 - Cubanismo

Aug 17 War & The Headhunters.

Here are some other places that feature live music - Cafe Du Nord on Market St (Jazz, Funk, Salsa and everything else), The Elbo Room on Mission (mostly Latin Jazz and Salsa), The Boom Boom ROom on Fillmore (Blues and Jazz), The Fillmore on Geary (all genres), Pearls (Collumbus - North Beach), Pier 23 at Fisherman's Warf (all genres and pretty good considering the touristy location).

These are places I have been to and have had a good time.

Don.

Dasher, damnit, I missed ya! I was in Monterey for a little while a couple of weeks ago. If I'd known I definately would've looked you up. If you're ever in Captain Bullwhackers say hello to John (the owner) or Lance (the manager) from me - friends of the family.

I agree about the aquarium, its quite spectacular. Some of the displays are not only educational but very artistic with great litte soundtracks - the Jellyfish in particular.

Its a beautiful area Mooghead - Monterey Peninsula, Carmel, Big Sur - all the way down the coast. If you're willing to pay for it there are some great spots along the 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach. Its quite busy aswell, but gorgeous.

SF is not a great town for hearing live jazz.

Pearl's, the only full time straight ahead jazz club in SF closed 2 months ago as did the Black Cat. There are no jazz clubs in North Beach anymore, though Enrico's Restaurant has jazz. A new jazz club is supposed to open in The Cannery across from Girahdeli Square.

Yoshi's across the Bay in Oakland is the only Bay Area club that features world class jazz, it is a great jazz club.

All the other venues mentioned in previouas posts showcase mostly local "acid jazz" or blues.

The Jupiter, a charming outdoor beer garden in Berkeley also features most of the local acid jazz groups playing SF clubs.

John, don't worry 'bout missing me if you're not heading back to the land of golf and haggis (hey, a man could get kilt over there!)

We've been at the Beach for close to four years now, and if we don't get fired for room complaints about the volume, we'll be there a while more.

Petros, I hated to agree with you, but I was in the city last Sunday and picked up a local edntertainment guide - you're right, a lot of the live jazz has disappeared. But there are still venues, if you look. Depends a LOT on how you define 'jazz.'

It's all about the music. Really. I just keep telling myself that...
