Patch changes on Alesis . . .

More simple-minded questions from the simple-minded . . .

I am just getting used to playing with a band, finally . . . and along with it, I am finding a variety of sounds that I prefer.

Here's my (rookie) question - Is there some sort of midi controller or something that I can use to make patch changes on the fly . . . without buying four keyboards? Some sort of foot pedal or something like guitarists use?

The Digital Music MX-8 MIDI Patch Bay allows you to bump its programs up via a footpedal. It will send program changes as its programs increment, but it only has 50 memory locations.

They don't make them anymore, but you can find them between $50-$100 on eBay.

Yes these are not uncommon and most music stores that cater to synth users will probably be able to show you at least one.

However, have you tried lining up the patches you use in the user bank? You usually need to tweak them anyway. I have all my pianos lined up so I can get to them with on button push so I don't have to go hunting through banks. If you have a fixed set list (hah!) you can even set them up in sequence.

I had to make one. I have a panel with 128 buttons (5 x 25 grid, last column 3 buttons). I can, with one keystroke, send any Program Chnage iwth one keystroke.

I like the flexibilty of selecting any voice whenever I feel like it. It also changes my 2nd keyboard and the DSP.

I don't know why some company hasn't made one. I was told there is no demand. The software is easy, too.

MIDI Solutions makes a couple of products that may work for you. Their Footswitch controller could be used to increment (or decrement) patch changes with a foot controller. Their F8 could be used to select individual programs or even be used as a combo unit with a footswitch that increments changes and 7 that select specific patches.

I think any guitarist's MIDI program change pedalboard should work for keyboards, too. They just send MIDI program change numbers. I used to always put my sounds right next to each other in the user bank, so I could just hit one button to go to the next sound. Just save your most-used sounds to programs 110, 111, 112, 113, etc.

I'm probably beginning to sound like a shill by now :D

The Kurzweil ExpressionMate, if you can still find one, allows this. It has 64 user programs with which you can call up patches on up to three other MIDI devices. It also has assignable buttons and footswitch/footpedal jacks - and those may be assigned to call up your fave patches directly.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.
