I've never used one, but one of my absolute favorite synth players (Grant Richter of F/i, also designer of the Wiard modular) uses it extensively (running an EMS Synthi through its FX section).

It's a touchpad controller with digital multi-fx built-in. Since the touchpad is a 2-dimensional surface, one touch can generate two unique values (in the same way that a joystick can, or similar to having one device that can turn two knobs independently & simultaneously), one for the X-axis and one for the Y-axis. The two output values can either be used to control various parameters of the multi-fx (delay time, panning, etc.) or (I think, but I could be wrong) to generate MIDI CC's that can be used to control synths or other MIDI devices.

If you're familiar with the ribbon controllers found on certain old synths (or the Kurzweil ExpressionMate), it's similar to one of those, but with two dimensions (planar) instead of one (linear).
