im a beginner. i took a class and we had a keyboard setup to a computer through a MIDI cable. and on the computer we had a sequencer. i could play something on the keyboard and record it on the computer. with different sounds. i want to be able to do that at home with my computer. and i also want it to have a lot of sounds. or be able to upgrade to have more sounds some how. that is mainly what i want to do. i would also like it to have a record feature on it so i can record something and play it back on the keyboard. i have about $200 to spend. any good ideas or recommendations?

Yamaha DJ-X. It is a small workstation aimed at DJs who want to make their own music, and it's got a sound engine with 500 or so sounds, half of them aimed at the dance market, the other half are regular sounds for any style. It has a four track recorder, rhythm generator, arranger, realtime control knobs, and it sounds really good, like nothing else in its category.

Yes yes yes. Go try one. They're very big fun!

If you prefer more traditional music styles, you might want to try one of the Yamaha PSR series - surprisingly good sound for a very nice price.

The Roland Em10 is a great Buy. Unlike Yamaha PSR's or Casio's it doesn't have an annoying look to it, and the sounds are really good quality, especially the piano, for such a cheap instrument. When you look at Casio or Yamaha instruments, there are like 20 of each and add some features every 30 bucks more you spend.

As for upgradibility, most keyboards in this price range don't offer that, except that some PSR's will let you add style disks and stuff. But after buying a keyboard I would suggest your next upgrade be either some soundfonts for your soundcard or something like a roland JV1010 which gives you tons of sounds and flexibility for $500.

I think the Roland is just a touch better than the casios and yamahas just in overall quality. The DJX is another story, it depends on what kind of music you're doing.

I've had the Kawai MP9000 sitting in my studio for nearly 2 years. Everyone, and I mean to a person, who has sat down to play it whether it's rock, country, show tunes, classical, whatever...have commented on its excellent sounds and playability. It also has balanced outputs and records to tape very, very well.

BTW, I am a keyboard player and really enjoy playing it myself http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

It can be had for about $1,500.00 which leaves enough left over in your budget for a pair of Mackie powered monitors, a set of good headphones, cables and a stool!

Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/redface.gif Sorry about this one. Just realized I posted to the wrong thread. I was trying to help Charper with some info on the digital piano question http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif
