was Drum pricing - now Got new Kit!

coyote

Recommended Posts

I may be in the market for a new kit. I need 2 bass drums, 2 mounted toms, 2 floor toms, a dbl tom stand, and a few boom cymbal stands.

I do NOT need a snare drum or stand, hihat stand, straight cymbal stands, or bass drum pedals. In theory, I should be paying a bit less than I would for a full set, right? So I'm checking all the avilable resources.... It would cost me more for the drums (bass & toms) alone than for a full kit! This is irritating the heck out of me. And the various sellers are (understandably) reluctant to buy back the parts I don't need. How annoying!

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This is not good news for me as I am about to start looking for the same exact thing (a shell kit.)

Mybe the more esoteric, custom brands would be less of a rip-off when buying this way. Good excuse to buy such a brand, I suppose.

BTW, Anyone have good suggeston for a great all-around recording kit? There's the industry standard Yamaha birch kit, of course.

any other really top-end and well established for recording?

An update: I'm picking up my new set tomorrow!

The vendor (SamAsh) became willing to work with me - and in fact gave me a better deal than I anticipated. I saved $300 off the previous total. Only problem is they won't take the duplicate 12" tom (that would have reduced the price even more). Guess I'll try to sell it or something.

They did the right thing. :)

I bought two sets. Ash has a closeout on Yamaha Stage Custom Standard (custom standard? an oxymoronic drumset! :D ) sets, so I got the Standard (yep, the Standard Custom Standard) config and the Fusion config - 22,16,13,12 and 22,14,12,10 respectively. Each set comes with snare drum, stands, and pedals. Usually it's $799, but on closeout it's $599.

Then the horsetrading began. I already own a snare drum & stand with my other set, as well as a lefty double pedal. I didn't need:

2 snare drums

2 snare stands

1 hihat stand

2 kick pedals

2 straight stands

So I gave that stuff back, and got 2 boom cymbal stands. (I kept one hihat stand.) They were also giving away a cheap guitar with purchase this weekend, so I traded that guitar for another boom stand. That gives me a total of 9 drums and 5 boom stands - and the total $$ was just over $900.00. I only use two rack toms, so the duplicate 12 (the one piece they absolutely would not deal on) will be paired with the 10 as a timbale set.

The bass drums are incredible. There's no 'boing' in them; they sound like cannons and require absolutely no muffling. 12 & 13 rack toms, a 14 "mounted floor tom" and the 16" floor round out the kit. The toms sound great as they are, but after the first set of heads wears out I'll likely replace them with emperor pinstripe or whatever hydraulic heads sound good nowadays.

Add my existing snare drum and my Pearl double pedal (which comes apart and works as two singles) along with a couple of existing boom stands and the set is complete! At $300.00 savings with a "free timbale set" to boot. :):)

An equivalent 7-piece double bass kit at MusiciansFriend is $1200; it has an 18 instead of the 14 and comes with two straight & one boom stand. On balance, I did pretty well with this deal. I'm very happy.

Man, that's cheap even at the regular price, for a quality drumset!

".....my Pearl double pedal (which comes apart and works as two singles)....."

!!! Which pedal is that? I've never seen that before, and would be exactly what I need right now.

Is it a fast, light, precise pedal, on top of the versatility issue?

I don't know the exact model#. It's a chain-drive pedal with a very light, fast, precise action. Stability plates underneath (of course). Each half has its own spring and hoop clamp, so you can simply remove the connecting rod and move the beater and voila! you have two pedals.

{edit} An update: I've checked all resources that I can find - the dbl pedal config I have doesn't appear anywhere. Who knows - maybe it's a feature unique to lefty dbl pedals? In any event, you could probably add a couple parts to most existing dbl pedals and get the same result.

P.S. The droplock clutch I have that didn't work too well with my existing hihat stand works perfectly with the new Yamaha stand! I also added a CP cowbell mount which attaches to the tom mount (or cymbal mount, for my purposes) on the left bass drum so I don't need one of those horrendous hoop mounts. Man, this set has worked out to be just about perfect. :D

I'm dabbling with adding the 10" tom to the setup. It sounds real good, and doesn't interfere with the rest of the setup to any noticeable degree. It's there - might as well put it to use.

I actually bought this set so my drummer wouldn't have to haul his kit into my studio.... but I'm having so much fun that I almost dread the day he comes and sets it up the way he wants it! lol Almost makes me wanna get into a band as a drummer again. :) It's also showing me how the lack of practice has eroded my chops.

P.S. This is the dbl bass pedal I have. Pearl P202TWL Power Shifter Double Bass Drum Pedal (Left hand Model) I don't remember paying nearly as much as stores are asking.... I got it at Guitar Center a year ago for less than $200.

Here's a pic of the set:

And here's the layout.

The red things are electronics which I don't yet possess. The multipad will likely be Roland, the round pad Dauz. Dunno about the other three yet - they might end up being cymbal pads from Hart or Yamaha.
