vintagevibe
I've narrowed my search for a new kit to the Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage and the Tama Rockstar Custom. Both are similarly priced and come in the natural blond wood that I want. Any thoughts or expeiences to share that might help me make up my mind? Thanks. Super 8
If I'm not mistaken the Rockstar and Stage series are closer to student kits? I have a Yamaha Stage series from 1983, and I think they sound great. I use a Pork Pie snare however. Either set is probably fine. Go set them up (same listening environment -because a different room will change the way the drum sounds) and jam on them and go with what you think sounds best. In terms of quality, it's a toss. They are both well respected brands with plenty of experience making drums. I'd worry more about tom sizes than brands. The skins you use and how you dampen them -or if you dampen them- and how they are tuned will play a BIG part in how the drum sounds. If you make good choices in these areas, brand name loses it's meaning. Super 8 Hear my stuff here
coyote
I recently played on a Yamaha Stage Custom Standard set with 20x17 bass, 12 & 14 toms. It sounded GREAT, and I love the way the drums are finished. IMO they're every bit the equal of a kit twice the price. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. bassdrummer
I played a Rockstar for years and I've just gone to Yamaha. I'd recommend the Stage Custom. I had problems with my Tama hardware, and I was never happy with the sound of the toms. I couldn't get them tuned right--mainly the 13". I couldn't stand the snare and traded it up for a Pearl Sensitone. Yamaha has excellent quality control. I've played the Stage Custom and really liked the tone, craftsmanship, hardware, everything. Go with Yamaha. I just recently bought a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute in cherry wood and I love it.
