new kit!! which one? Tama, Pearl, or Gretsch?

I have done a fair amount of research and can not make up my damn mind.

1)**Tama Starclassic Performer-Birch

Great Hardware , nice finish, Die cast hoops but the head combo

they put on these from the factory make them impossible to compare; single ply top and bottom but poor choices for the drums. They can be tuned okay but double ply top, single bottom would be better.

Kick drum sounds great out of the box.

Mounting system is A+.

2)**Pearl Session Custom SRX--B grade maple, but all maple.

Hardware is good but tom mounts are hung off the lugs as opposed to Tama and the Bass drum tom mounts are key adjustable as opposed to wing nut style adjustment. I think they can be changed to wing-style adjustment mounts, but this would add to cost. Triple flange hoops

and B Grade finish. Take a look at the top of the line pearl maple kit and then look at Session and you will see what I mean; even pearl will tell you this as well. However, all that said , the kit sounds damn good even with stock heads.

The kick sounds great. Godd kit for the $.

Gretsch Renown Maple-all maple

nice finish-good sound all around

mounting system is okay, similiar to Tama style but these too are mounted on the lugs and cheaper grade than the Tama. Die cast hoops- Bass drum tom mount has a funky placement adjustment and the two rack toms

use five lugs instead of six(not sure this would matter, but maybe in certain tuning cases).

However, all said again the kits I have heard sound pretty damn good.

Hopefully you can see my dilemma. What would you guys do?. I have heard the Starclassics live and the kit sounded good(different head combo), but it hasn't knocked me out in any stores yet and this could be related to stock heads.

I really need to buy a kit and these are all in my price range, HELP?

Any of you guys have any input on these kits?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

The best 'bargain' kit I've seen/heard recently is the Yamaha Stage Custom Standard. ("Custom Standard"??? lol) They look great, they sound great. The bass drum needs no muffling, the toms sound real good, the hardware is solid. The snare drum is not great but it is good enough. Sam Ash has them for $549.00 for a 5pc kit.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

Hey man,

before you buy any of those kits, check out the Sonor Museum web site and read up on how guys describe the awesome sound and crafsmanship of these drums. I've been a Sonor player for some time now and words can't express how great the package is. Amazing! I was blown away by the review written in this months MD Magazine on the Sonor 1001 Series beginner kit. It just goes to show what high quality these dudes are into out there in Germany. Kinda like a BMW situation. Bam :thu:http://www.sonormuseum.com

Let me know what you think...
