Who is your fav bass player?

As a bass player, who should I be listening to, so that I can keep the drummer happy?

I would like to start by suggesting James Jamerson, Lord Of Motown, Emperor of the Funk. (He also played on Boom, Boom, Boom by John Lee Hooker apparently.)

Free your mind and your ass will follow.

Well, there's my wife, whom you've never heard; after her:

1)Paul McCartney - played nice melodic lines w/o overpowering the other instruments or vocals

2) Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones) - simple, solid bass playing that fit those rock classics perfectly.

3) Tommy Shannon (?) )Steve Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble) - like Chris Layton's drumming, bass lines approporiate for blues, but interesting and just a bit different one song from the next.

4) Mel Schaffer (Grand Funk) - great bass player in a great 3-piece band.

and, of course,

5) Larry Graham - Mr. Funky bass!!!

Nice to see someone mention Pete Trewavas (Marillion).....he's one of the best-kept secrets in rock and he gets better everytime I see him. I went to the Marillion weekend/convention in April at Somerset, England and I got to see them play for 2.5 days....There were 1,800 fans from all over the world and it was held at Pontins resort....one the old holiday camps that was built in the 50's, popular with working-class British families.

This will be a lot shorter than my drum list.

James Jamerson - of course

Anthony Jackson - because he is just bad ass

Lee Sklar - reminds me of gravity

Jimmy Johnson - smooth, effortless

Nathan East - all that pocket AND sings well

Will Lee - big, sweet pocket

Marcus Miller - funky, funky, funky

Alphonso Johnson - always makes me smile

Duck Dunn - groove, groove, groove

Family Man - BIGGEST POCKET EVER

Victor Wooten - he gets better and better every year (and doesn't really need to)

Drumtek, I didn't see your list but i'm feelin' you. Meshell is the shit. A buddy of mine saw her in NYC with Wil Calhoun and said her playing was "like being wrapped up in your favorite blanket on a cold and snowy day". High praise, for sure.

Stanley Clarke, how could I leave his name off the list - i'm an idiot.

I agree, d. Bootsy got the funk, & he'll never let go!

Aside form Bootsy, how about:

1) McCartney. Great bass player, could be solid and inventive.

2) Wyman. 1/2 of one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time.

3) Shannon. THE Meat-&-potatoes bass player.

4) Tom Hamilton, Aerosmith. Solid, yet refined and riff-y.

5) Jack Bruce, of Cream & solo fame, the one and only Jaco P. This could anger your drummer, though... :D

6) James Jamerson. As you said, the ultimate.

Most of those guys have been said, but they're the greats, so they go for double!

Chuck Rainey - Steely Dan & so many others.

Verdine White, earth wind & fire.

Rocco Prestia. Tower of Power, check out "Good Credit"

Jaco, Will Lee, J.J., Bill Wyman, John Paul Jones, Patrick O'Hearn & any of Zappa's other bass players, like Tom Fowler "when left hand not broken".

Depending on what style of music you do, there's loads of amazing players to recommend. What style(s) are you doing?
