Yamaha vs Roland electronic drums

I have my eye on the Yamaha DT Express, which is about $400 or $500 less, Canadian, than Roland's entry level kit. Neither kit comes with a decent snare trigger, so that's another $400 to $500, and I'd like to keep this as cheap as I can.

When I go to the stores, the staff tell me the Yamaha is a horrible investment because Roland is a better product, with better sounds, better resale value, more easily upgraded... blah, blah, blah...

I've explained that I'm going to leave the kit on setting 1 "acoustic" and never touch the electronics, that both kits sound like crap to me, and that I only want them for practice pads, but still they're telling me I'd be foolish to buy the Yamaha.

Are these guys correct, or are they just trying to up-sell me?

While I'm on the topic, is there a gum rubber trigger pad that has the rim as a second zone? I've tried the mesh heads but I'm not sure how wise it is to practice on a surface that's actually MORE responsive than a real drum head.

I got the dtxpress and its a good set, lot cheaper and its pretty good, the roland is a bit better but you'll be just fine with the yamaha. The only problem I got with that set is the cymbal sounds that suck, but they do on all the electronic set so....

just go with yamaha

I had the dtxpress for a while when I first came out and it was fine for practice....you can layer all of the acoustic drum voices, and tweak the crappy acoustic cymbal sounds for some pretty decent sounding kits.....there's a dtxpress web site and mailing list where you can download some custom made kits which are pretty cool..

$400 or $500 for a good triggering snare?? look at the Pintech or Hart Accusnare for around $200...

the dual triggering of the pad depends more on the module capability....the dtxpress is pretty limited in this regard....

bang for the buck you cant go wrong with the dtxpress....it depends on what your needs are....if you have the money and want to move to the next level in edrums, definitely go with the Roland V-Clubs.....
