UTS-D
Hello my fellow low frequency production artists! I need some suggestions on a good combo. A couple of the guys in my band and I are thinking of starting a cover band just to generate some extra cash. Currently I run a monster of a bass rig but for this cover band, I want a combo. I haven't had a combo in about 12 years so does anyone have suggestions on a good combo? My budget will be $700. Thanks for your time. UTS-D
Cool deal! I literally work right around the corner from Carvin, so I'll go check them out at lunch. Anyone else got any suggestions? UNDER THE STONE Me
SmittyG
I know if I were shopping for a new combo, those Carvin's would be on the top of my "must check out" list. I have also always been a fan of the Peavey gear. I know that their products evoke strong reactions from bassists, but I still wish I had never got rid of my old TNT amp. If you are looking just for just stage sound and have a PA for your FOH, I have one of the Ibanez 100w combos and I love the tone out of the thing. But, this ain't one of the "100 conservative watts", this thing is 100w and that is all you are getting. Unless this is a very low-volume band, you would need PA support. The groove is in the spaces. getz out
Besides the $700, any other restrictions or requirements on weight and size? Volume? What head are you using? Considered getting a small cabinet?
The Bear Jew
It's tough to go wrong with SWR's Super Redhead (2x10, 300 watts) combo... I don't know if they make 'em anymore, but you can usually find them used in your range. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
UTS-D
That's it! Just a cab! Genius! I'm playing through a Glockenklang Soulhead which I simply love. I can't believe I didn't even think about that. Duh! I think that might be the way I'll be going. Thanks Getz! And thank you C. Alex and Smitty! getz out
$700 for a speaker cabinet, then? The Soulhead does 440-watts at 4-ohms, right? Any particular size you are looking for?
Mike Bear
I'm coming to SD to try your Glockenlang... wait, that didn't sound right. Mike Bear Artisan-Vocals/Bass Instructor

UTS-D
HAHAA! That's awesome! yeah, that Glockenklang is 440 and 4ohms. We have a store down here (San Diego) called Bass Alone and they have a Bergantino cab(2x10) for about $750 (I think) so maybe I can spare another $50. There's just too many damn options. My top suggestions (depending on your tonal preferences and required loudness): http://www.urbbob.com/ea_speakers.html#wizzy http://www.epifani.com/cabinets/UL112.htm http://www.bergantino.com/ scroll down to HT-112 And beyond budget but rather well renowned: http://www.glockenklang.de/en/products/bass_systems/space_deluxe.htm Alex Barefaced Ltd - ultra lightweight, high ouput, toneful bass cabs
dohhhhh6
Cheap solution would be a 2x10 Avatar Neo cab. In Skynyrd We Trust
davio
I like the different cab solution but if you want more of a different tone between your originals band and the cover band, I'd suggest a combo. I'm going to be investing in a decent combo in the near future specificaly for my jazz and musicals gigs. I've been interested in those rolling Carvin combos since I first saw them but I also really liked a Nemesis combo I tried out a while back. The NC210 and NC212 would attract my attention if I were currently shopping. They should be right around your pricerange.
Tom Capasso
Alex - no ACME in your recommendations? Shocked I am !! While the combo suggestions here are good ones, I think you should use your Glockenklang (for short do you say "glock" and confuse it with a pistol, or "klang" to show you make some noise?). That Berg is a good choice, but test the Sadowsky 2x10 they have. It's made to be extra-efficient, and may prove to be very loud. It will have a different tone than the Berg. Don't forget to bring YOUR bass and the 'klang to test them. Tom www.stoneflyrocks.com Acoustic Color Be practical as well as generous in your ideals.
