jlrush
After having installed SPB-3's in my passive P bass I have a humongous buzz, which was never there before. It goes away when I hold the strings though. They were installed by a luthier/friend with a good reputation. When I suggested cavity shielding he said that it wouldn't really matter because the noise comes from the pickups' output at the top and shielding wouldn't help.Don't know if it matters but I have 500K pots.Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! Big Daddy from Motown
500 K pots won't contribute to noise at all. If it's a big hum, it has to do with the ground wire of the pickup.
g.
It still helps to shield pickup cavities anyway. Do such and you will notice that when you turn the bass away from the amp or any noise-inducing stuff that it is quieter than when the pickup face is pointed toward them. But either way, your luthier hasn't finished his job. .

Agreed, either he screwed up or the magnet wire is cut along the pickup coil. If it's the latter, you'll need the pickup rewound or replaced. At present, none of my P-bass pups hum, active or passive.
