Phil W
Ok, this is a really long shot but I owe it myself to try. I was in Carlsbad briefly in the summer, north of San Diego. I was in a sushi bar with some relatives. We overlooked downstairs where, at a another regular medium sized restaurant garden, a killer band was set up in the garden - featuring drums, keys, a sax/wind synth player and a stunning bassist. I spent most of the meal, popping out with my son - checking out the band (as much as was possible without being rude to my relatives). We had to leave before they had a break so I didn't get to speak to them. The bass player/ bandleader was a huge, African-American guy who also sang very sweet lead vocals. They played a set of funk and fusion including the staples like Chameleon. The bassplayer took extended solos on most songs and played a lot through a mutron or similar - his solos were expansive and groovy at the same time. This was just a small gig but obviously these were some very hot players. Does anybody have any idea who it might have been? http://philwbass.com
ClarkW
http://www.gigmasters.com/jazz/JeromeDawsons/ If you look in the "click here for more photos" to the right underneath, there seems to be band photos but it looks like a smaller white guy is holding the bass. There are definitely 2 huge African-American guys in that picture, though, so maybe it's them? Maybe it's someone else on here: http://www.gigmasters.com/Funk/FunkBand_SanDiego_CA.asp Here's a big fat list of San Diego bands: http://www.sdcitybeat.com/SDMR05/bands.html Good luck! ArwinH
I could ask a few people I knew or show them the thread, they might know the player from the scene. www.myspace.com/movementwithoutmotion
Phil W
Pity I didn't get a photo, or make a mental note of what gear he was using. http://philwbass.com
