That little list I compiled aren't necessarially dubious practices (although most of it is); external power supplies may indeed be a failrly benign tradeoff for cost (except, of course, when you have a rack full of things which all have external power supplies- then it just becomes cumbersome.

 

Of course, UL and CSA approvals are for more than just increasing product price- they are there for the protection of the custmers and end users.
