A Cheap Alembic?!

Well, I was just at one of my city's better (and less well-known) music shops, bringing in an old mandolin for a setup. Of course, I checked out the bass section - and found a used Alembic in perfect condition for only $1350 CDN. These sell for $3200 US new. I think it's an Epic series - looks like this:

So uhh... does somebody want to send me money to buy it? :D

I tried it out - it sounds amazing. I almost dropped it I was so awed. It felt perfect... it fit my hands perfectly. I wish I had the money to buy this beauty. It's killing me to let this pass me by.

The salesperson was impressed with my playing. *insert shameless self-promotion*. He told me that down the road I deserved a nice bass like that - I agree. :D

Ah, the Epic... It's the least expensive bass Alembic have ever made - IIRC they used to retail here for £995 for the standard model so I guess they sold for about $1000 in the US.

I have a feeling that I've played one but I can't remember when. I keep remembering an unusual U-shaped neck...

Bit of trivia: Flea recorded every track on One Hot Minute (bar Aeroplane) with a stock Alembic Epic.

Don't worry about missing the deal - this isn't going to be a one-off. There's plenty more Epics at great prices out there and will be for years to come.

Isnt the conversion rate something like $1.5 to everyone Euro? So it would be more like $1500? :freak:

I don't know....i only own one bass (and it's my first and only), but...after reading bumps gas thread, i don't think that i can ever bring myself to spend more than $1000 on a factory bass or more than $1700 absolute tops on a custom bass.

After a certain point i think you are paying for a name, which serves no functional purpose in music.

Keep in mind that this is coming from a man who is frugal and who is marginally satisfied with the tonal choices that an ibanez soundgear offers...but this all may change once i get a job after school, and my ear continues to develop.

I think in the case of Alembic, a lot of it is paying for the name - but they have the quality to back the name.

I always find it funny with Fender and their Squier. Kids who don't research things buy these, and I know some sound good, but on the whole they are inferior to a quality instrument. I almost got sucked in buying my first bass - I was standing in the music store staring at the stacks of Squier Bass Paks, with nice slogans on the boxes saying "Most Popular Bass in the World!" I almost got sucked in, then I did a bit of research and got an Ibanez instead.

My problem is the opposite - I'll see a bass I like, then I'll research it and feel the need to sell my soul to buy it. ;)

But in the end, a bass is just a piece of wood and metal and it's the person who's playing it that counts. It's the musc flowing from the instrument that counts - the bass is just the channel.

Ahh, yes - but just like TV, some channels are better than others! :D

Sounds to me like you should do the right thing and buy that baby. You owe it to yourself!

I thoroughly believe that when an instrument speaks to you, then it's unfair on that instrument not to buy it!

Good luck

I recall BP gave the Epic a pretty good review several years ago. If you can find this back issue...

Also check ebay, I see a lot of Epics for sale there. Plus,it will give you a feel for the average used price of these basses.

Thanks. :D

I'm thinking of getting a job at that same music store - I saw a help wanted sign when I was there. A new amp and a violin of my own are also on my list of things to buy, and that store deals mostly in folk music instruments. I'll take a closer look at their amps today, they had some good ones.

There's no point in buying a high-end bass if you have a crappy amp. :P

On a completely different note, I'm supposed to do some fiddling in a concert tonight, and I'm sick and my ears are plugged so I keep playing everything flat. :( Wish me luck...

I think that i'd like to take back the comment about my spending limits.

While wasting time traveling link to link i stumbled upon this bass

It's the first bass that has ever had this kind of "have to have it effect" on me.

And it can be mine for the nice price of $3000.

edit: I've always had tone envy, but the sheer beauty of this instrument is like...wow.
