Backing vocals are all well and nice. But if you're concentrating so hard on them that you start ralphing up the bass part, then that's just unacceptable. Ya gotta remember the 11th commandment:

 

Thou shalt not neglect the groove. No matter what!

I've had to simplify the part before too - at least for awhile. That too was a learning experience. What was acceptable, and what was a travesty to the groove. But it's hard to underestimate over the course of an entire night, how much negative impact leaving out too many harmonies can have. Some of the throw-together bands I've seen just seem to leave out a hella lot of vocal upliftment. They should either learn to cover at least some of it - or recast some of the songs.
