Oh Man. I know from previous threads there are mixed emotions about jam bands here. I too have a hard time with some of these groups that seem to meander aimlessly for what seems like an eternity (Phish, Dead, etc.). However, This is still my favorite genre and for the choosier listeners some amazing music can be found. I currently cant get enough of this band known as the Porterhouse Quintet. Disc is, Thumbs Up Little Buddy. These guys are amazing. Real talent and practice restraint quite well. Every solo well thought out. They are the perfect mix of funk and jazz. Completely instrumental with lots of horn, percussion, bass, keys, etc. Currently they top my list. And of course the bassist is awesome. It been a while since I heard a band showcase the bassist so well. Every bass player owes it to themselves to check them out. Listen here!

Also, right in there with them is a band called Schleigho. Also a jazz fusion based group with more jazz than funk. They are a little less focused than Porterhouse, but still a great listen. The bassist plays electric and upright and is currently studying with John Pattatuchi (SP?). Loads of groove.

Listen here!

Well, I tend to listen to more music in my truck than anything. practically livin in it the last few weeks :)

Black Sabbath: Reunion

Clatter: Blinded by Vision

Chancer: The Fall

Crazy Ivan: Astronomical (a great 80's hair band type music. know the guitarist/vocals Greg Noll since grade school)

Wicked Tinkers (forget the album name, but it dont matter, its all good. Bagpipes & drums baby!)

Tempest: Shapshifter and Balance (will be seeing these awesome musicians and Wicked Tinker next weekend at the Sonora Celtic Faire & Jousting Championship)

Led Zeppelin: Various Albums.

Thin Lizzy

Triumph

at home on my PC:

Red-X: Demo (awesome Christian Rock band. also know the lead guitarist George Miller for a number of years)

Styx: various albums

Lynyrd Skynyrs: various albums.

Music from the Lineaage 2 MMPOG: Composed by Bill Brown & recorded by the Seattle Symphony. simply beautiful.

Lord of the Rings Soundtracks.

I have to admit, this wonderful board has opened my eyes (well ears) to a wider variety of music. I have many more albums on my "gotta buy" list from threads like this.

Too bad the singer jumped ship to join Van Halen. Not the first time a singer demonstrated his lack of business sense (and probably not the last.)

Have you given III sides to every story a listen? I think its the best cd of theirs. Cupids Dead :thu: Also i totally love Colour me blind. I love the bit where you just bash out that one note after the monster riff at the start (bout 0:33-1:02 secs into song)
Derek Smalls: It's like fire and ice, basically. I feel my role in the band is to be somewhere in the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water. http://www.myspace.com/gordonbache

Dammit. Just Another Band From LA is one of the albums I don't have on my machine at work. Live At The Fillmore East is going to have to do for now... almost the same band.

I spent the weekend seeing my mate from uni in wigan. His dad had EVERY Zappa album ever, I was very happy but also very jealous as I have a way to go yet.

I totally agree. III Sides... is a fantastic album. That huge guitar/bass soli in "Cupid's Dead" is worth the purchase price alone. As I understand it, Nuno and Pat wrote that whole section while on tour; just kept adding to it every night. Solid. The big "Everything Under The Sun" suite at the end is also notably epic and well done.

Extreme had already bit the dust well before Gary Cherone went over to the Van Halen Disaster Area. Nuno decided that he could do better on his own and I believe the entire band self-destructed shortly afterwards. Too bad VH III was such an awful train wreck.

edit: currently listening to Lenny Pickett & the Borneo Horns. Brilliant album. It's been out of print for a while, but you can still find it on Ebay and/or Amazon occasionally. This thing just kills. Tons of sax and horns with minimal percussion and grooves that are undeniable. Lenny Pickett is the friggin' man.

Sloan, Navy Blues

Bassist Chris Murphy is somewhat from the McCartney school of doing things. He's great with a pick (without making it sound like a pick, too), comes up with some beautifully fat tones and does some nice melodic things. By far one of the more tasteful bass players in the Indie/alternative scene. And he does it all relatively low tech, with a Mustang bass and an SVT rig.

Wow, in the era of MP3's, a bit difficult to narrow it down, but currently in the players are: Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Sister Sweetly (Rob Squires can really lay down the lowdown,) Jimmy Buffett's Songs You Know By Heart, Joe Satriani - The Extremist, and of course, I have all, yes all of Journey's albums on one disc to cut down on changing time in the truck.

2 actual albums I have out presently are Journey - Captured, and Play Guitar with the Ventures Vol. 1.

So I am in my basement music studio, and decided to listen to some vinyl. Wanted to hear some Jaco so I dug out my *pristine* Pat Metheny "Bright Size Life" album. Purchased in 1977 (East Lansing, Michigan) and it cost me $4.99 USD.

Well, this record is simply wonderful! Haven't listened to it for several years (and don't have it on CD).

Am really digging the ritual of playing records--very different that slapping in a CD..

Playing this record brings back some very fond memories--single life (pre marriage and my daughter's birth (1979)), and wondering where my life was going to lead me.

Reflecting back these so-many years, I am very satisfied with my life. things worked out very well, thank you!

Oh, BTW, that daughter I mentioned? She now has two beautiful daughters of her own.

Time passes very quickly, my friends.

(no, forceman isn't stoned or drinking--just reminiscing with my online buddies.) :thu:

Bach's Goldberg Variations, by Andràs Schiff.

This is a must have record. Way much better than any other versions I have listened to. And I own a few.

Interestingly enough, in the liner notes, he insists that to play the aria correctly, you have to focus on the bass...

Go buy it.

A two-album CD, originally released as "Apostrophe" and "Overnite Sensation". One of the less-appreciated great composers of the last century, a guitarist who was unusually reticent about his skills yet inspired some of the best in the business, a work ethic that would send most musicians running back to their day jobs, and someone who paid close attention to what was wrong with the American psyche.

And he did it all without drugs.

There can be only one Frank Zappa.
