Wow, this is an old thread...I never even responded to this...

I have a Crescent moon with a twinkling star on my left wrist (kinda like the one you see in the christmas paintings of the manger and stuff, or Pinochio) and on my right wrist I have a modified Godsmack logo Tribal Sun. Instead of it being a circle with the rays around it disconnected, the circle in the center is not filled in, and all the rays form a continuous design around that circle.

I am planning on getting my whole entire lower left leg done. I want it to be a kinda dark, almost haunted spooky forest with a lot of crooked branches and slanty trees, and there is going to be a path in the middle on the front and back of my leg, and it will look like there is a path going through my leg.

Only thing is, is that it is going to cost about $800 - $1000. And thats with my friend's friend doing it. Does $100/hour sound right for a tattoo charge? My first two were $300 for the both, and they took about 2 and half hours.

$100/hour? Wow. For someone not fixing my car or toilet, that seems steep.

I'll do it for $20/hour and a bottle of whiskey.

I'd give you the whiskey afterwards, of course.

Ahh.. finally.. Something I have a ton of first hand experience in.

I have a 30 hour piece on my left shoulder/arm/chest/back. (I'll post pics when I get home.)

You can expect to pay $100 per hour or more for custom work. If you are going to a "name" artist, triple that. My shoulder was done by a friend of mine who owns a tattoo studio in Illinois. I got a $60 an hour rate. He was charging everyone else $100-150 per hour, based on the work.

When you are talking ink w/ the guy/gal, be sure to lock in a rate for the initial work. He should not charge you for touch up work (and there is going to be plenty of that). You should get your touch up work done for free or the price of needles and ink (about $20 a session).

A leg piece like that should run about 15-20 hours. You are looking at $2000 worth of ink. That is an investment of your time, money, and body for art. If the artist doesn't consider it art, find someone else to go to. Ask around, check out the shop, and don't let somebody's friend tattoo you in the kitchen.

Well I talked to the guy who gave me the price, and I've met him before. He really liked the idea, and estimated it would take about 8-10 hours. My friend who is friends with this guy has at least 10 tattoos that this guy did on his legs, and they all look great. I trust him that he will give me a fair price and a great piece of art.

But of course, I'm gonna have save my money. I was thinking, that I generally have about $30 - $45 every month or two from coin change from whatever I used cash for. Now, if I save that money until I'm done with College, then I'll have enough to get it. :D

As NUTT has so aptly pointed out, price is dependent on the artist's stature and the complexity of the design.

I wouldn't let getz76 near me if he's been around whiskey and there were sharp objects at hand.

Peace.

This was finished July 2004. The pics were after a touch up session. There is what looks like bubbling scar tissue on my back, that is just the tattoo healing from a session about 3 days prior to the pictures.

This is all easily covered with a polo shirt. If you are going to do something big like this, think about your future.

Corporate America still frowns on tattoos such as this. You should see the looks I get at the gym we have at work.

FYI, I'm a Business Analyst in a Program Management Office at Hewlett-Packard in Houston.

No ink as of yet. I've been thinking about getting one this summer. I have 3 different custom ideas that I've been thinking about. I'm not yet sure which I'll get. I've been suprised at people's reactions to my telling them that I'm simply considering it. Most of my friends are suprised but encouraging because I guess I'm not the type they'd expect to have a tatoo. But some...mainly my dad and sister...have been quite vocal about their disaproval. Not that they'd be mad about it but they don't think I should.

I'm thinking about going with my room mate over the summer because our singer (who has about 23 or 24 tatoos if I remember right) has told him that if he gets a tatoo, he'll pay for it. Unfortunately I couldn't work out the same deal. I guess it makes a difference since he's known my room mate for several years and me for less than one.

  • 6 months later...

Why not, indeed!

After 10 years of threats, a friend is holding me to my promise to get a tatoo "the next time I go to Florida" which is in 2 weeks. I have wanted the same character the entire 10 years, so this is not just a passing whim.

It was my first tattoo, I wish I knew it was the "artist's" too. It didn't come out as well as I expected. It's also my only. I've had it about 9 years. One of these days I need to get it transformed into somthing else because fixing the line thicknesses would make it even worse. It is a design that I stole and claimed as my own in High School and made quite a few T-shirts with "my symbol" on them. It along with my beloved bass would be the only symbol I would want branded on me forever. Here's mine, only in black ink on a white arm.

Regrets? Yes, only because of the workmanship. I would have been happy to only have only one tattoo or none, and to be quite honest I don't care to see them on women. It's really funny to think how these 19 year old girls' "tramp stamp" (tattoo on lower back) is going drop 4 inches and shift to the left by time they reach middle age.

As far as advice for anyone thinking about getting one.. By all means... Be unique like everyone else. OK, don't take advice from someone that peirced his own ear at 13.

If you think my playing is bad, you should hear me sing!

I had a moment where I was very rebelious (my whole life). At one point, I was ashamed of my sleeves. But, now I've realized it was just God's plan for me. It (they) help me to reach others, and to minister to them how God can turn your life around. It's just on the surface...but inside your heart is what counts!

My "pen name" speaks for it's self.

Spread love and helping others...that's it!

Can you post any pics, tatudbassman?

One I thought was freaking awesome and I was blown away that the gf said she is actually considering it as a possible tattoo:
