ondray
Hi, I don't have a teacher or another bass player to ask this. Hope you guys can help me out. 1 = left hand index finger 2 = left hand middle finger Am practising it this way: G-----------0-----------------------------| D-----0--1-----3-----------0-----1--1--3--| A--1-----------------4--------------------| E-----------------1-----1-----1-----------| 1 2 1 2 2 1 2 2 1 2 1 2 1 Is this one of the correct ways to play the notes? Are there any other positions that i can try? Another problem i am facing is the barring of the last four notes in the riff. I would put my right hand index finger on the E string fretting on F and play the D# note (third and second last note) without moving the right hand index finger, just like what a guitarist would do for barr chords. My question is, is this the way to barr notes too for a bass player? Or there's no such thing as barring for bass? Thanks for your time. ondray
...
I usually play the Bb bits of The Chicken starting on the E string 6th fret Bb... I like how it sounds in that position better. No open strings and I feel that there are more options at my immediate disposal for fills/improvising on the line there.
jeremy c
Same with me, I wouldn't dream of using open strings on a song like that. One finger per fret works fine on a song like this. You don't have to keep your hand stretched, you can pivot a little between playing the first finger and fourth finger notes. Free download of my cd!. g.
Yeah, I shy away from that type of open-stringing. And cross-string barreing for single notes usually doesn't seem as cool as moving the finger or using another one. .
DWBass
I agree as well. In fact, I don't like playing open strings on anything if I can help it except for slap lines in E! Just my preference. www.myspace.com/thefunkfather

jeremy c
The Chicken by Pee Wee Ellis was one of Jaco's favorite tunes and it's on a large number of authorized and unauthorized recordings of him. I've also heard other versions, including one by Maceo Parker. Learn it. Free download of my cd!.
K. Hansen Reed
"The Chicken" is a Jaco Pastorius chart. Best version (I think) is on the The Birthday Concert album. Awesome bass line with a great groove. "What's it going to be then, eh?"
ondray
Thanks guys for the inputs. Will try to play the tune with non open strings. By the way, I got the tab from this website: http://mysongbook.com but you will need the Guitar Pro software to open it. Great site with lots of tabs contributed by guitarists and other musicians. Jorg
Didn't Jaco used to play it with a lot of open strings? At least that is what I remembered from looking at his instructional video and a bootleg of the Montreux Jazz festival?
...
Let's try this again, and maybe the power won't go out this time before I finish. Scoot
Whew, after reading the title of this thread, I was getting worried about the direction this forum was heading. Thankfully we're still talking about music. Ah, nice marmot.
