Quite honestly, playing extended minor scales and minor pentatonic scales with at a clip (which you have to build up to) can sound friggen cool, and it doesn't get much simpler than that.

Some of those really basic things can sound great, and it's only a matter of getting into the music. I mean, some really great and fun to play rock songs are 3 or 4 simple chords repeated over and over. For example (on guitar), it easy to play "Last Kiss", but its a good song to play and lots of people know it.

I found that I really started to have fun with even simple bass licks after a while of just listening and getting to know the common patterns and relationships. Plus, it's the beat that makes the bass REALLY work, and once you start to feel that beat, it becomes MUCH more fun, in my opinion.

Get a beginner bass book, or some simple walking bass lines and read them. They will help you a lot.

The walking lines force you not to look at the board so often (if you don't already, thats great).

I reccommend the Mel Bay series. Thats what I learned on. There is also a book called "Serious Electric Bass" by Joel Di Bartolo that is a great book. It goes over ALL the major and minor scales and the modes and chords. It also has a section that is a reference to a complete setup for your bass. It can also diagnose some probelms you may have with it.

My Dad got it at Guitar Center, but you can probably find it elsewhere.
