xhawk4
Hi all Been a while! I recently got a hold of a '73 Precision with a Kubicki body and P/J setup. I absolutely love the tone from this thing with the EMG's in it. Like a punchy Jamerson tone, great for the music that I play. The thing is that it is strung B E A D instead of E A D G. I think its the best thing since corn flakes! Now I'm trying to learn my songs in different fingerings. Neat challenge since I don't play a 5-stringer. *** Finally my question... I'm planning to do the same to a Jazz RI I have. Cut the nut, bridge etc...and I'm wondering how do these thicker strings affect the neck, if at all? Thanks, Hawk
Mr. Phil
it wont. but what do you have to do to the bridge? you also might wanna keep one bass standard tuning. just in case. http://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/blue.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/black.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/fuscia.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/grey.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/orange.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/purple.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/red.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/yellow.JPG
xhawk4
Maybe file the bridge a bit (it's a badass) to fit the B string. And yes, I do have one other to keep standard. Thanks alot.
Timothy Lyons
Perhaps some taperwound strings would require little or no modification to your Badass. Generally give you a tighter sounding B anyway. \m/ Timothy Lyons
doc taz
I can fit a B string on my Mex Fender P-Bass Special with little modding. The nut would have to be filed slightly, but I wouldn't have to change the bridge. I think the touring bassist for Evanescence tunes his Fender Aerodyne bass in BEAD, low to high. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
earljam
Before you file the nut, take note of the gauge of the B-string. The ones I see at the local store are no thicker that E-strings- about 0.105; I had a hard time setting the intonation on my MIJ Jazz. Since you will have less tension on your neck you may need to adjust the truss rod. I was told that Tommy Shannon (hushed and reverent tone) used this tuning with Johnny Winter. doc taz
Earl, read the package descriptions. Last time I checked, most B strings are gauged at 0.125 or 0.130. You can see for yourself HERE . That's just one example, but most will come in those gauges I mentioned above. Just setting things straight. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page

Anyone else remember the 'bass built into a jumpsuit'? I use a Custom GHS set with a .130 B on my Modulus 6 string. a boy named sue
What are the "con's" of BEAD tunning? All I can think of is less sustain on high notes (playing higher up). A man is not usually called upon to have an opinion of his own talents at all; he can very well go on improving them to the best of his ability without deciding on his own precise niche in the temple of Fame. -- C.S.Lewis
doc taz
tom, only if the bass in question is full of dead spots would sustain even be an issue. A 4 string in BEAD should be fine, sustain wise, if it is set up well in the first place. Hope this helps. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
earljam
I checked and the set I have (ghs) has a .105 for the thickest string. Like a six string set with the low B missing. It came as a five string set.

If so, it sounds like a set to string from E (low) to C (high). not a bad bass for soloing, I guess... Ouizel
Sorry I couldn't be of help, my bass is strung B-E-A-D-G-C. **Standard Disclaimer** Ya gotta watch da Ouizel, as he often posts complete and utter BS. In this case however, He just might be right. Eagles may soar, but Ouizels don't get sucked into jet engines.
Sylver
How is it a '73 Pbass with a Kubicki body and EMGs? Sorry, I couldn't help it, I'm a smart ass. I really don't know what to put here.
