Geoff Grace
But didn't Pinnacle Systems retain the right of access to "certain intellectual property" of Steinberg's? Posted at Pinnacle Systems - Press Release : Pinnacle Systems Enters Into Agreement to Sell Steinberg Audio Software Business to Yamaha Corporation As part of the transaction, Steinberg and Pinnacle will cross-license certain intellectual property on a royalty-free basis and Pinnacle will continue to distribute Steinbergs WaveLab Lite audio editing product with Pinnacle Studio Media Suite.Very interesting... Philip OKeefe
A smart contract lawyer would have put a clause into the sale agreement that would cover this possibility. IOW, "if the remainder of Pinnacle is sold to a third party competitor, then this license / sharing agreement portion of the contract becomes null and void" or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if that's "in there" someplace in one of the agreements.
spokenward
Right, the Pinnacle Liquid Product has a Steinberg surround editor f'rinstance. (link from a reseller because the Pinnacle website blows. I dare you to find any information on that site.)

Philip OKeefe
Or they'll use it as a bargaining chip to get something they'd like to have from Digi - such as better integration between Yamaha boards / Studio Connections and PT. That's the way of the business world.
spokenward
Anybody know how VST is licensed?
Philip OKeefe
It's pretty wide open on the access to the SDK... but Steinberg "owns" it. I'm not exactly sure how the license works. But IMO, that's not really a major issue since there's a good VST -> RTAS adapter available from www.fxpansion.com
