Check the library of congress website -- www.loc.gov.

 

All the info you need is there. I do not believe they are taking online submissions yet (or plan to).

 

Just because a lot of people misunderstand this, I'll remind that copyrights attach when you create the original work and record it, write it down, etc. Registration with the LOC is just that, registration. It does not "bestow" the copyright. It is the best way to prove creation and ownership, and registration is a prerequisite for suing for copyright infringement.

An alternative to the "poor man's copyright" (a registered letter sent to yourself and kept sealed with the material in question inside) is to put all your music in, say, Mp3, or other compressed format on a CD-ROM and register the copyright of that as a collective work. You'll still need to register individual tracks later if you decide to license them out, etc, but your CD-ROM could help protect you if someone appropriates your work without attribution.
