Paul Vnuk Jr.
The Wild Wonderful World of Plugins Welcome to the August issue of RECORDING Magazine. This month, we dive deep in-the-box with a look at everyone’s favorite 21st-century audio tool plugins! ––and we have some DAWS and Controllers too! REVIEWS We kick things off with 14 reviews (many of which include multiple products). We have the H3000 Factory Mk II from Eventide, PSP Flare, a Pshyco-Acoustic Compressor from PSPaudioware, and the latest third-generation MORPH 3 from Zynaptiq. From Antares, we check out the many new voices in Auto-Tune Pro 11. KIT Plugins brings us its latest plugin collaboration with Nashville’s Blackbird Studio––BB Chamber A, and we round up the entire range of plugins from Safari Pedals in its Everything Bundle. We also dig into the new features, upgrades and enhancements in iZotope RX11. Our next two reviews blur the lines of plugin and hardware as we take control with the full SSL 360° range of plugins and controllers from Solid State Logic. Then, from AudioScape Engineering, we consider the XL-305R an equally tempered stereo spring reverb in both hardware and plugin form. In the realm of virtual instruments, we have the Hollywood Fantasy Orchestra from EastWest, BFD Player 1.2, and the MiniBrute V virtual analog soft-synth from Arturia. Last but absolutely not least, we step into the world of DAWs to find out what’s new in Steinberg Nuendo 13 and Logic Pro 11.0.1 from Apple––complete with a brief look at the just released 11” iPad Pro––let’s see what Logic can do on an iPad. INTERVIEW For our interview this month, editor Paul Vnuk Jr. reconnects with drummer and producer Dan Molad and lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the amazing indie-pop band Lucius to learn about the experience of re-visiting, rerecording and reinventing the band’s 2013 album Wildewoman, for the just released Wildewoman (The New Recordings). FEATURES In Studio 101, Joe Albano continues to educate us on the world of analog processes and effects. This month, he gets down and dirty with distortion and saturation, both in the real world and in the box. Mark Hornsby goes Inside The Studio to discuss mixing with the bare plugin essentials––EQ, Channel Compression, Delay, Reverb, Saturation and Bus Compression. If he could only have one of each, what would he choose and why? In a similar vein, in this installment of RECORDING Field Notes, Giles Reaves discusses curbing our gear lust and G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome) and how that wise gear selection can achieve better results in the long run. Finally, if you have ever been curious about the side-chain feature of your DAW and plugins, in this issue, Aaron Trumm walks us through The Myriad Forms Of Sidechaining––It’s Not Just For Ducking. Dave Martin is back with another of his informative takes on your songs in this issue’s installment of Readers’ Tracks, and Associate Editor Alex Hawley helms our Fade Out this month with his thoughts on AI in a Post-Production World.
