It looks like a ten string mandolin.

It looks a lot like a South American/Andean Instrument called a Charango, but that would be an odd choice.

 

Next closest thing is an antique cousin of the Guitar, called a Cittern, but that's more of a Northern European Instrument?

The first two I pulled out of memory - I used to work in a Music store that featured Folk, World, and Exotic Instruments. The Cuarto I found by searching on "10-string Cittern."

i think that's why it sounds a little more distinct.
