First, apologies but I have to post this!!!

Second, I AM a bassist, I played bass for Bo Diddley when he came to Fresno and he smiled and shook my hand after the gig.

Wally Malone, who is a member here of the highest regard, was married to Lady Bo (RIP).

Thanks for posting that! Here's a blurry photo of me playing bass with Bo Diddley. I don't remember the year but at dinner I think he said something about being 64 years old. MeandBoDiddley.thumb.jpg.3742ffdedee5e30e8ad97971119fd3b5.jpg

LOL,An interesting picture, but I have to say that in a band, the BASS player really doesn't stand out as much as the drummer and guitarist.
But personally, I love cats. Living with cats is a blessing.
Just doing what you love has been great!

The bassist only stands out if they are failing to lock the groove or don't know the song. They carry a burden and a band without a good bassist falls short but nobody bows before the Gods of Low Frequencies. 😇

For perspective, I am in fact a guitarist and singer and that's what most of my gigs are based on (pun intended).

My first electric instrument was a bass, I knew a group of friends who needed a bassist. They got somebody else so I swapped the bass back in for a guitar and woodshedded for a few years.

I've almost always owned a bass in the 55 years I've been playing, currently I have both fretted and fretless basses, one of each. Low frequencies are paramount to what I like to record and I do sit in on bass here and there. I play one or the other at least a couple times a week. It took a while but I learned the profound differences between playing bass and playing guitar and I also learned that knowing chord shapes is very useful on bass even though I won't be "strumming" or even playing all 4 notes for the most part.

Being the groove and keeping it simple but solid are good things I've learned. I have no aspirations to be a blazing bassist, just a solid part of the overall sound.

Having played with a lot of "ok" bassists in my non-pro music endeavors, when I finally got to play with a really good one it was quite an experience.  Not because the dude was flinging out solos like Billy Sheehan--he could lay down a simple eighth-note pulse and it just made you move.   Ironically, it also made me play less because the song sounded so good with just bass and drums, I felt I could simply try to add on to the goodness here or there.

But yeah I get both the keys thing and the cat thing.  Specifically, keeping my cats off my keyboards is quite the job.

The only comments I've gotten in the 12 years I've been gigging with my band have been about my Spider Pro stand.  Our singer said one day "is that a new keyboard?"  Yeah, a year ago when I first started playing gigs with it, it was!   Meanwhile our guitarist seems like he brings a new guitar out every week and everyone under the sun is oohing and ahhing over it.  I'm not jealous!   My comment, said quietly:  "great guitar, let's hope this one stays in tune better than last week's...."   I'm not bitter either!

It is amazing what a relaxed but talented bass player can bring to a song. It is the foundation for everything else to build on.

Exactly correct, I've often called our bassists "The Secret King" because the whole thing tumbles to the ground without a solid foundation.
