I I mjrn
A recent thread sought help in searching the Net. Here's a suggestion: The Extreme Searcher's Guide To Searching the Net is a book by Randolph Hock that offers comparitive tests of the most popular (& most effective) search engines as well as meta-search engines. It covers their formats & operational structure, similarities & differences, ease-of-use, which search engines the meta-crawlers (like dogpile) use, etc. It also offers a number of less obvious considerations & gives one a good idea of how to do your own tests to determine which may be more helpful generally or in specific cases. One thing I found particularly revealing is that in each test different sites missed results that others offered---never just depend on one! Hock also maintains a site ( extremesearcher.com ) where he updates info on changes to the most used & strongest search tools & hints on how to manipulate them.
