I'd recommend throwing yourself deep into the local cuisine. Nothing makes friends faster in the South than an appreciation of fried catfish, pimento & cheese and the joy that is Biscuits and Gravy. I'm almost a pariah with my extended family in Mississippi because I like my iced tea unsweetened. They mutter 'yankee' as I walk by - a few of them spit tobacco juice but it misses me.
