d halfnote
The week before Gregg Allman died, local ATL hero Bruce Hampton died. He died onstage performing "Yurn On Yer Love Light" during a concert celebrating his 70th BDay, performing w/ such fans as Warren Hatnes, Derek Trucks & Sue Tedeeschi. B/c he was a very unpredictable cat, when he collapsed everyone thought he was doing a James Brown, bring-me-the-cape routine for abt 5 minutes.[*] Some may know him as the force behind Aquarium Rescue Unit & other "jam" bands. I, however, will always remember him from my exposure to the Hampton Grease Band, which I discovered by accident one night when I listened to a frind's record thinking it was by Joe Cocker's former backup band (those in the know will get that joke already). Anyhow, why do we care here ? Here's BH showing how to work a gtr. [Not the Skip James / Cream tune exactly...not "Sympathy for the Debble", either ] Besides stinging interjections in several places, the main solo, a raucous slice of 60s style rock = 2:40~4:15 & extends after the next verse vocal starts. Winston Psmith
That video of Col. Bruce collapsing is pretty harsh. You can see that everyone seems to think it's a goof, at first, then that young fellow playing the solo starts looking down, like "this is taking too long for a joke". Man . . . d halfnote
Yeah, I wondered if I should put it up here but I think it does 2 positive things: It shows a great muso going out doing exactly what he loved to do. It also relates to the New Rule as mentored by LarryZ & heartily endorsed by me & 9 outta 10 PhDs... "We laugh; we don't cry" d=halfnote
