Jazz+
Erroll Garner has a new album, "Ready, Take 1", to be released 9/30/2016. It includes 14 never before released studio recordings from his greatest period from 1969-1972 (often overlooked). He died in 1976. Some music critics have said that Garner's left hand pattern is the clave pattern. It's actually more complex , sort of like a 4 measure montuno pattern that could have been extrapolated from clave ... he frequently employed this pattern when he played Latin tunes... it's 4 measures of continuous equally spaced dotted quarter notes that are forced to re-set every 4 bars. El Lobo
gawd, I love his playing. What's the name of dat tune? It sounds like a blues, with a bridge, and outside playing over the changes. And that left hand ... Edit: I guess the name of the tune is Wild Music. Is that a Garner original? These are only my opinions, not supported by any actual knowledge, experience, or expertise. Jazz+
- In my opinion between 1969-1972 was Erroll Garner's greatest period. And often overlooked. At that time Erroll was playing at a feverish intensity and expanding his repertoire to include more modern pop tunes from the likes of Blood Sweat and Tears, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, etc. - [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] Harry was the Technical Editor of Mark Levine's "The Jazz Theory Book" and helped develop "The Jazz Piano Book." Jazz+
I have good charts for all these Garner arrangements above including the new track "Wild Music". (You may PM me)... I have transcribed the head phrasing on almost his entire discography. Garner wrote over 100 compositions beside "Misty". Misty is well know mainly because singer Johnny Mathis had a pop radio hit with it. Harry was the Technical Editor of Mark Levine's "The Jazz Theory Book" and helped develop "The Jazz Piano Book."
